Jewel Balcony Query - Southern Caribbean

Hi folks,

We're looking at Jewel's November 1st cruise next year, leaving San Juan and visiting Barbados, St Lucia, Antiqua, St Maarten and St Croix.

Is there a "preferred" side of the ship for a balcony in terms of optimum views?

We were on starboard side. The ship was docked both ways and I can't say that it really mattered which side we were facing. Cruise is so port intensive that we didn't spend time during day sitting on balcony - sat out in the evening enjoying a glass of wine! It was also very warm when we were in the Caribbean and we probably would have been too hot!!

Not only is it unpredictable which side will be used for dociking, "optimum" can vary from person to person.

It's true...the Captain will try and give both sides a chance at facing land, when possible. You do have a 50/50 chance.

I see you're still spreading that nonsense.........................

Lots of factors dictate which side they dock on, but the Captain "giving everyone a view" is not one of them.............................

One of the few times a Captain does try to give a view is at the glaciers in Alaska when he rotates the ship.

Otherwise you are correct that is not something he or the harbormaster care about when docking at other ports.

Hi there,

We always book port side; most if not all of our cruises, the starboard side of the ship has been the smoking-permitted side, so we simply prefer to try and minimize our exposure to cigarette smoke. Just saying what works for us. :)

Jewel is the perfect ship for a Southern Caribbean itinerary because it is one of the ships which has outdoor aft Windjammer seating. It is fabulous to have dinner, or coffee and dessert out there - most evenings, it was not crowded for us and the views and peaceful sunsets are lovely.

Enjoy Jewel - she is magnificent. :)
