Also depends on what rental car agency you use. Some have shuttles to the port. So you may be able to drop it at their local office near the port and take a shuttle...

From the Port of Miami web site --

Rental Cars Several car rental agencies are permitted to operate at PortMiami and provide shuttle service to their off-port remote locations. Contact your preferred car rental agency directly for the most up-to-date information and schedules.

The following agencies provide transport shuttle services from the Port to their rental offices. Fees may apply, so please contact companies directly for complete details:

You gave us a great idea. We will take taxi from MIA to Hertz POM rental site and return to POM Hertz and either take their shuttle or grab a cab to the port.

Thanks

Maybe you could just pick up at MIA & drop off near the port

Depending on where your hotel is in the morning of the cruise drop the bags at the port before dropping the car off ....

Almost positive you can pickup your car at MIA and drop it anyplace you choose in the State of Florida including the POM so save yourself the cab ride and get the car as soon as you arrive at the airport.

MIA has a rental site, several companies-not all, operate shuttle to port. Taxi from MIA to port was $25.00 fixed rate, same fixed price in reverse. With lots of luggage I would drop luggage and other passengers at port and drive the 15 minutes to MIA.

That's true, but Hertz charges' $300.00 more for the 3 day rental too drop off at a different location.Price for 3day rental is $110.00 to drop off at a different location $401.00.

Sorry for any confusion. Did say almost sure. Used to be free dropoffs anyplace in Florida but, guess the policy has changed. Glad to know the new policy.

Drop all your bags and other party members at the dock, at your prescribed bordering time, and take the rental car back. Then get a cab back to the port.

Having done this, you will be surprised at how often you will be able to share the cab ride with other cruisers. ;) This becomes even more likely if you're not carrying luggage. Actually, it's not unusual to find a waiting line for cabs, and it's easy to ask if any one is going to the Port and would like to share a ride.
