Carnival took our box wine but not our...

I would like to clarify one point, and it is my fault that I didn't say this earlier. I don't have a problem with their per drink price, it is about what I expected. And since my wife and I are not big drinkers, it is within our budget to have a drink or two while on our cruise. But just before I read this thread, I had been on Carnival's FunShop and had seen the price of their bottles of liquor, and to be honest, it floored me. Maybe I was wrong, and it isn't that far off from what those brands would cost retail. It just seemed astronomical to me.

 

I don't endorse anyone breaking the rules by sneaking liquor on board or bringing their own snacks into a theater. But I can understand why sometimes they might.

I could care less if people try to sneak booze in anywhere - as long as they don't throw a stink fit and disrupt other's worlds should they get caught.

 

And I would shocked to discover that those who sneak alcohol on still don't purchase from the bars. Refilling in your room for each drink can be a bit of a hike depending upon where you are and/or require missing part of a show, activity, meal, etc.

 

For those who don't drink - appreciate those that do. Otherwise I would easily see cruise prices quadrupling overnight if they suddenly went booze free.

I would suggest bringing 1 bottle of wine (750ml) per person in your carryon. that is what you should do on your upcoming cruise in my opinion

I understand why people do it as well, but alcohol is not a necessary item. The costs are high because Carnival is trying to make money. Your cruise fare doesn't pay for a $500+ million ship, fuel, employees, etc.

 

They don't like people like me with a $0 ending bill.

I wonder if NOLA is just THAT much stricter with booze. 3 years ago in Baltimore and the past two years in Miami, my 5L box of wine has made it through in my checked luggage.:D:D

I would be SO disappointed if we get "nabbed" the next time.

I like the "cheap" box wine and would not drink the wine on the ship.:(

While cruise price might rise some, I highly doubt they would even double, much less triple. Casino is where the money is and Disney cruises are so high, even with alcohol being sold, because their lack of casinos on board.

When I cruised in December I got the "letter" in my suit case saying they had confiscated my 3 inch fan (use it for white noise at night.) But....did not find the 2 bottles of liquor (Jim Beam and CC) sitting right next to the fan....:eek: Oh, I did get the fan back on embarkation day:)

DH and I have been on 33 cruises on for cruiselines and we used to bring liquor with us in our luggage until we finally got caught about 4 years ago. We didn't bring it on board because we thought the drink prices were too expensive, we brought it on board because of the convenience of being able to make cocktails in our cabin whenever we wanted to. So, after we got caught we started ordering a bottle of liquor to be delivered to our cabin upon embarkation and we still bring the mixers with us in carryon. Works out fine and we don't have to worry about being sent to the naughty room. However, we just sailed on Holland America the week of Thanksgiving and their pre-cruise liquor prices are about 1/2 of what Carnival's is. Carnival's prices have gotten outrageous, but we still buy one bottle.

I'd like to see them go further than that. Post a warning that people who are caught smuggling alcohol will be denied boarding, enforce that penalty a few times, and the entire issue goes away. After all, who would be foolish enough to risk losing their cruise just to save money by attempting to smuggle liquor on board?

 

I don't drink so the matter in a way does not affect me. But why are some people concerned about what others do. People getting caught is between the cruise line and the individual. More people need to worry about themselves rather than the penalities that others receive.

I can't imagine going to my favorite roof top restaurant in NYC that has the most amazing views and trying to sneak in my own food because their prices are too high.

 

I would have no problem with people breaking the rule and admitting that 1) they are cheap or 2) they get a thrill out of breaking the rules. I do not think "I can not afford to buy on board drinks" is a valid third option because maybe you should reassessing whether or not you picked the right vacation.

 

I personally believe 1 bottle of wine or champagne is a great compromise and reasonable.

A room on a cruise ship is more comparable to a hotel, not a high end restaurant and most hotels allow you to bring alcohol to your room and not have to purchase it from the hotel bar. That is a more accurate comparison than a a restaurant.

I respectfully disagree. Hotels prime source of money is rooms or rooms & catering.

 

Restaurants primary income is from purchases at a restaurant... I would argue that is a larger portion of Carnivals income as well.

I often wonder the same thing....I think it is because people are (A) Nosey and (B) think they are better than everyone else. These are the same people that get all worked up because people aren't dressed to the Nines in the dining room and let it affect their vacation. Social Media has made people think that they can do/say whatever they want to anyone at any time. These perfect folks that protest about smuggling liquor are probably the same people that have no problem cutting in front of me while I'm waiting for an elevator.

you just posted it on a public forum. what did you expect? People cheering for you and throwing you a party. everyone has an opinion and if you open yourself up on a public forum about breaking the rules, expect to get negative responses. Personally if I am going to do something against the rules, the last place I would mention it is on a public forum.

 

I don't think people are rude or nosey or that they think they are better. they just saw something that someone posted that they disagreed with and wanted to share their opinion

 

(I really love the smuggling or smoking on the balcony threads that tell everyone not to post if they disagree... that makes me laugh)

 

If you don't want both sides to comment on your rule breaking... don't post. its really simple. if you do post about rule breaking, the least you should expect is comments from both sides of the fence.
