Items stolen on disembarkation day

 Share

Recommended Posts

We were on the Carnival Dream for 7 days after Christmas. When we were unpacking a couple of days after our home arrival, my wife noticed that her expensive sunglasses, some jewelry, and curling iron were missing. She packed them before we went to breakfast and they were inside our suitcase. That is the only time that they could have been taken from our packed and closed suitcases. So, the only "window" of time they could have gone through our suitcases would have been when we were at breakfast. That leaves the cabin steward in question. From the time time of our disembarkation, the suitcases were always with us. This is our 10th cruise w/Carnival and an additional 5 w/other cruise lines. And, this is a first. Before anyone says something about how an employee would never take a chance in thievery, let me say that a majority of a retail store's loss comes from employee theft. My son was a manager for Best Buy for 10 years and says employees made up for over 70% of items stolen from the company. I realize that Carnival will probably do nothing, so writing a letter to them would probably be futile. Has anyone ever experienced the same experience?

If you did self assist then your bags would have been with you the entire morning. Why would the room steward needed to be in your room the morning of embarkation? And if you didn't do self assist, how were your bags with you at breakfast when they take them the night before?

When doing self-assist we always leave our bags in our rooms while we go to the lido for an early breakfast. I'm not weighing in on the theft per se, rather the fact that it's very plausible for the luggage to be left in the cabin on debark day unattended.

It is plausible. Maybe. I'm just thinking why would the cabin steward need to go in the room prior to them leaving the ship to embark for good. Unless it was strictly to steal. Stranger things have happened.

Write a letter to Carnival OP. If the steward entered your room while you were at breakfast, they should be able to find the electronic record of the key entry.

The poster was talking about debarkation, we often have left bags in our rooms while we grab a bit to eat, yes they want you to leave as quickly as possible from the room with all of your stuff however a bit of cash & our steward has always moved on to other rooms leaving us until last.

To poster, it can't hurt to write to Carnival. Even if they do nothing for you, you will have at least alerted them to a potential problem employee. As an employer I would rather know that I might have a problem that needs to addressed than remain completely in the dark. And you may just save someone else from the same experience.

To OP, I feel your pain.

I've had items come up lost, misplaced, or stolen.

Sometimes things happen in life.

Fortunately, my travel insurance came thru to the max allowable coverage.

For insurance to cover, you will first have to file a claim with Carnival for them to investigate. Then, when you receive their letter of inability to help, you can submit this document along with receipts of items lost, misplaced, or stolen, and you should receive a check within a couple of weeks from your travel insurance provider.

I guess you are inferring that you didn't leave you room until after breakfast. We do the same thing, actually leaving the room when we are forced out.

But that doesn't stop them from coming into your room when they strip the beds and such. Don't assume the steward was the only one in your room, cause they sometimes keep the doors open when doing this.

Your analogy is flawed though. I am assuming the Best Buy employees are not stealing from their customers.

Well, OP also had to get home. I assume they flew. Did they check their bags with the airline?

A lot of folks drive to the port.

You just 'gotta watch those valuables yourself. I keep everything I don't want to have disappear either with me, on my person or in the safe. I lock my bags before setting them in the hall not to keep somebody from stealing but to keep someone from putting some kind of contraband in my checked bag that would be a problem at customs.

This is at least the third or fourth report of thefts on the Dream. The others were back in the fall and coming from several cruises in a row. Maybe the bandit slacked off a bit and is now back at it.

Great title for a crime novel: The Dream Bandit ;)

If the cabin steward began to clean those rooms, it's possible the door was left open. I highly doubt that the cabin stewards would go through suitcases. But I wouldn't be surprised if passengers went through open rooms to see what they could find.

On the December 20-28, 2014 Breeze cruise a lady had her purse stolen. Her S&S card and cash were in here and the purses was later found empty. Here is where it gets really strange.

1)carnival stated there were no cameras in the area where it was robbed. Where was this you may ask? In the casino bar. Yah right lol.

2)$1500 was used on her S&S card for purchases. Another total fail and carnival let the people do it.

3)The lady's family wired money to the ship so they would have some cash. Carnival promptly put it towards the $1500.

They admitted to their mistake but for all of this they only offered 4 free drinks and yes I know she will get her money back but they had nothing to spend for the entire 8 day trip.

So it was all female items that were missing. Just curious--did you have a female cabin steward?

I never take any jewelry with me when I cruise (except costume jewelry), and I certainly wouldn't leave expensive sunglasses or any other valuable items in the cabin except in the safe.

Sorry this happened to your family. I've been on 31 cruises, and have never come up missing anything. But I am very careful and proactive. I leave my good stuff at home and the semi-good stuff I do take with me when I cruise goes in the safe if its not in my direct possession.

I would contact Carnival and let them know, but at the same time I would just make sure to ask and see if these items are not just in lost and found. There have been times I put everything in my suitcase, but low and behold there is this small bag with my stuff that I forgot to pack that I will find. My mom also left her IPAD in the room with some other items during a cruise and it took a few weeks but Carnival found and shipped it to her house.

How did you get from the port to your home?

That is what I was thinking. I would be way more suspicious of airline staff than my room steward. But if you you drove that doesn't make sense. But I did wonder.

I have had a lot of strange things happen to checked bags with airlines

I basically asked that on the first page and of course got told that people drive to a lot of ports. Um, yeah, but OP lives in CA and the Dream goes out of NO, right? So, I asked about checking luggage, but "mysteriously" OP hasn't been back.

Yes, robbery by a crewmember is definitely always a possibility. But I do wonder if that's what happened here. Seems like days went by before the bag was even opened. Did the OP have her eyes continuously on the bag from the moment she left the ship until she noticed the missing items days later? Did anybody else have access to the bag during that time? Other things could've happened besides robbery by a crewmember. Did the items even make it in the bag? Could they have been left on the bathroom counter in error (more than once I've been sure I put something in my bag, only to be told by my wife that it's still sitting on a table. :o).

Not trying to say that the OP is lying, but there are other conclusions that can be reached besides robbery with the extremely limited and thin "evidence". There's NO WAY Carnival would accept responsibility for this.

Sometimes we just post things that happen to us because we want to be heard not badgered. Sometimes we speak of it on Cruise Critic cause we feel that we have something in common with others which is cruising.

I was on Carnival Miracle, in 2010. I had packed and locked my luggage put them out in the hallway. When we got home the next day my husband and I usually unpack within the next 1/2 hour of arriving home. As soon as I started to put my things away I noticed that like 10 or so socks (Diabetic Socks) all black that look like men socks were missing. Did I get angry no, did I get mad at Carnival no, cause it wasn't Carnivals fault that an employee stole my socks, it just shows me that no matter were you are we are not suppose to let our guard down. Very sad but true.

I don't fly so no one else outside of Carnival employees touched my bags.

What I want to say is yes it did happen to me, did I report it no, cause I felt nothing would be done. But like someone said maybe we should report it, not because we will get our items back but so that Carnival becomes aware that somewhere inside there is a few rotten apples.

I am just posting what happened to me, not speaking bad of Carnival or anyone else just what happened.
