sarar Posted February 24, 2015 #1 Share Posted February 24, 2015 We will be on a Mediterranean cruise in may and visiting Rome (Civitavecchia), Florence/Pisa (Livorno) and Genoa, can anyone recommend any private tour companies for these Italian cities? TIA
CruiserBruce Posted February 24, 2015 #2 Share Posted February 24, 2015 If you look down the board, you will see MANY recommendations for tour venders in those ports. For example, there is a huge thread on the wonderful Rome in Limo, which operates in Rome and Florence/Livorno. Booking in multiple ports with them typically earns a discount. ROCruiser Posted March 16, 2015 #8 Share Posted March 16, 2015 Highly recommending Nicola Scovenna. We had him for our Livorno/Florence/Pisa tour in February and had an amazing day. His van is equipped with free Wifi. He also arranged our tour for Naples/Pompeii/Sorrento/Positano. nicola.scovenna@gmail.com or livornotoflorence.com
Rare GeezerCouple Posted March 16, 2015 #9 Share Posted March 16, 2015 We had two amazing private tours with: Dr. Dino Margiotta Licensed Tourist Guide of Rome (License n° 4650) Ph.D. of History - University of Rome, La Sapienza MP- +39 3498850834 E.mail: rometourguide@libero.it Facebook Page: http://www.facebook.com/DinoRomeTourGuide it.linkedin.com/in/dinomargiotta/ P.I. 12122601003 He did his PhD research in the Vatican archives, so we had him take us on a private tour of the Vatican. (Yes, there was overlap with the larger tours, but we went at our own pace, and also took some private detours.) The day before that, we had him give us a half day tour of Ancient Rome, and that was terrific. He was great about pacing things for us, and stopping for more detail if we were interested, or "moving on" if something didn't interest us quite so much - one of the real advantages of private tours. On this tour, we went over a bit on time, because we were enjoying it so much. (No extra charge, but we gave him a nice tip.) He's very much an "academic", so if you are looking for a guide who will be full of jokes, he's probably not the right match. But to *learn* about the history and culture of the area, he's the tops. We also had a private tour of the Uffizi in Florence, and I'll try to get the name. She gave us a lot of background on some of the political intrigue behind the times, which was fascinating. She also "kept going" long past the time, and didn't take any extra money. We got the feeling she LOVED the artwork and sharing her knowledge. We were with Italian friends for the general "Florence overview", and scheduled the gallery tour after they left. GeezerCouple

sarar Posted March 16, 2015 Author #11 Share Posted March 16, 2015 We have done Rome before and decided in the end to stay local in Civitevecchia. We have booked Andreas at tours-europe.com for Florence/Pisa.
