asalligo Posted April 3, 2015 #126 Share Posted April 3, 2015 I just saw this posted on a FB group that I'm in. I don't know the source or how truthful it is. Carnival just announced this: Carnival Cruise Line is piloting an expanded 24-hour stateroom service menu to include a variety of new in-cabin dining options for a fee. The fee-based choices include sushi, chicken wings, fried shrimp, quesadillas, personal pizzas and more. Each of these items will be individually priced. A wide range of items are still available at no charge, including seven different hot and cold sandwiches, three salad choices, three desserts and eight beverages, along with a Continental breakfast menu. The expanded room service menu is designed to significantly broaden and upgrade the line’s culinary choices available for in-room delivery. There continues to be a wide range of complimentary choices and these new fee-based options are simply intended to create even greater choice and variety for our guests. The pilot will start on Carnival Imagination, Carnival Conquest and Carnival Pride April 12 and, based on guest feedback, may be expanded to other ships in the future. Sushi! Damn!, they have found my kryptonite! I would pay for Sushi on my Balcony.
Kel040 Posted April 3, 2015 #127 Share Posted April 3, 2015 I'm totally fine with this. Carnival is maintaining what is already offered, and adding more for those who wish to purchase it. I agree ! We will be on the Pride April 12th sailing, so I will try to post the room service menu before sail away (while I can still get online with my phone) :D
Love2Cruz2015 Posted April 3, 2015 #128 Share Posted April 3, 2015 I just returned from a 6 day sailing on the Conquest for Spring Break. I had a fabulous time, but I did notice a little change. No chocolates at turn down. Did it ruin my cruise, of course not. My 5 y/o was disappointed, so I took her to Cherry On Top and let her make a baggie of chocolates that she can have for nights, so crisis avoided..lol So Carnival made money on me with that small change lol. I had a NCL Getaway cruise booked, but after so much reading about getting nickel and dimed to death, I slept on it and even until this morning was on the fence...but in the end, Carnival won over and I will be booking the Glory because of itinerary and past experience on Carnival. As long as Carnival doesn't follow NCL business model, I will choose them over and over again over any other line. I cruise often, and with the exception of a DCL cruise that I do for my DD, Carnival is the right line for me, the fun factor is worth it. Their value is unmatched, as is their food and service is always a win/win with me. (Disney does well with service, no so much with food and value) I work in a conservative field so I like the feeling of just unwinding and having fun on vacation. cdamion Posted April 3, 2015 #131 Share Posted April 3, 2015 Cumulative effect, I have no intention of arguing the merits: Booked balcony cabin in May. July Carnival announced no smoking on balconies. February announced replacing free drink with water. March announced new menu effective May 31 on the ship. No chateau briand, only 2 cold fruit soups and won't go into any other details. March, no chocolate at turndown. If true, charging for room service would be fifth unilateral change. Add changes in entertainment - reduced band sizes, possible elimination of show band in theater depending on ship. (side note - I actually found the bottle of water more helpful than a free drink much to my surprise)
cdamion Posted April 3, 2015 #132 Share Posted April 3, 2015 (Lurker only, and my first cruise is still months away, but with all the developments across many lines I've seen in the last month, I really feel like I picked the wrong year to start cruising.) No you didn't. Carnival is far from my favorite brand and I just got off a Carnival ship a week ago and it was just a fantastic cruise with very few complaints. I have some nitpicky complaints, but really nothing that detracted from the experience at all. Enjoy and sorry for the future cruising addiction the rest of us suffer from. I would love to try a new line, but I know Carnival and 7 days on NCL means I could be 7 days closer to platinum.

MrMileStoner Posted April 3, 2015 #137 Share Posted April 3, 2015 I seriously doubt the free items will remain free in the long term. It's called unbundling, and the airline industry started doing it years ago. A cruise ship is an unbundling dream, with so many small included items to cut or start charging for. The airline industry wishes they had as much to unbundle as cruise ships. It adds a lot to the bottom line without raising fares. Airlines would charge you for use of a seat cushion if it made economic sense. The cruise industry will follow suit, slowly, over time. Cheap customers are what leads to what you call "unbundling." All they look for is the cheapest fare and so that is what companies try to give them. Then cheap customers complain about being nickle and dimed. Be careful what you ask for. Carnival is still the best value out there. You can still take a Carnival cruise and not spend a dime on the ship. Bags still cruise free. :)

Kristi Williamson Posted April 3, 2015 #139 Share Posted April 3, 2015 I believe the real point is this: As long as they add a few things and charge ONLY for those items, I'm good. But, we all know that as long as everyone remains silent, that won't happen. Eventually, they'll faze out the inclusive food on a ship. We utilize room service a good bit and based on the NCL post and this one, so do other loyal cruisers. I would be very unhappy if all room service ended up having a charge, or even if they reduced the inclusive items on the menu to almost nothing. We order room service almost every morning and at least two or three times for evening dessert and tea. I tip the person who brought it to me, but I should NOT have to pay extra for items that are free elsewhere on the ship because someone rode an elevator and walked down a hallway. That's bull. Flame all you want, but I would be extremely unhappy if they start charging for room service. That is a long time perk that needs to stay in place. Charge a dollar more for tips if you must, but I don't want to pay 75 bucks a week to have a danish and coffee on my balcony in the morning. At some point, enough is enough. Stop taking away the things that really make cruising special and unique.:cool:

cruizinisthebest Posted April 3, 2015 #142 Share Posted April 3, 2015 (edited) Thanks for pasting the menu. Are the deserts still free? Lots of choices! I see nothing wrong with this. Bonsai Sushi isn't free anyway. And the pizza line can be a complete turn off to getting it sometimes. I would gladly pay $5 late at night to skip that. This is a far better roll-out than what NCL did simply because they've made everyone aware and the most expensive items are still cheaper than their charge of $7.95. ready2cruzagain Posted April 3, 2015 #143 Share Posted April 3, 2015 I don't know where you have been, but on my cruise a month ago, they still have lamb chops in the MDR for free. Yes, one night were the $20 chops you get from the Steakhouse which are a better cut (NZ Lamb), but another night, they still had the regular free lamb chops and let me tell you they were yummo.... Andy Well they must have started serving it this past year because they served lamb SHANK on my last 7 Carnival cruises. I have not been on a Carnival cruise since Dec. 2013...switched to Princess because of the downhill spiral of entertainment and food. I am going on Carnival again but doing the longer Carnival Journeys. I sure hope you are right and they have lamb chops again.

Sweet Dutch Girl Posted April 3, 2015 #147 Share Posted April 3, 2015 People choose room service because it is convenient even though you can eat elsewhere on the ship. I, too, would miss my early morning coffee and croissant but if they charged I'd walk the steps to procure it, myself, as long as it was available when I get up at 6am. Maybe the key would be for the buffet to offer "to go" trays so that you could easily carry the stuff back to your room if you so desire as well as sealable coffee mugs (paper or otherwise). My feeling is that the free delivery items will disappear soon or will get a charge added due to the attitude of many that "We don't care if it makes our cruise cheaper". Personally, I am not seeing Carnival as being the mega cheap they were the past couple of years. Our last 4 cruises were on Princess and they cost LESS than anything closely related on Carnival.
