Is Eze a town that is easily explored on foot? Is the town laid out on a hillside? DH has difficulty navigating steep hills. Eze sounds as if it would be a pleasant town to explore, but I'll be doing it on my own if it is mostly uphill. Thanks for all advice.

I guess "easy" would depend on the individual. But Eze Village is a relatively compact walled town with many slopes and some uneven walk areas. There are also some steps in parts of the town to get to certain shops, restaurants, etc. The good news is if you have an uphill slope it will be downhill when you return? But since distances are relatively short and there are plenty of places to rest (in a shop, café, on a bench) most folks do fine. I would not call the slopes "steep hills" but I guess this again depends on the individual.

Thank you to both for your replies. We did not have difficulties navigating St. Paul de Vence, so perhaps we will be fine in Eze. We will be in port in Monte Carlo for a day. We explored that locale, as well as Nice, Cannes, Grasse, St. Paul on past visits, a few years ago. DH complains that everything worth seeing in Europe is built on a hill. Yes, it is. That is part of its charm. I am just hoping to have a complaint free day. Would Menton and Antibes be easier to access, with more to see? We don't need to see another perfume factory, for certain. I do appreciate all advice.

Menton and or Antibes would be a much better bet...since you have been to St.P Eze is about the same.Menton is a small city like place with an old town area,but it has some hood places to eat etc. Antibes is easy to navigate and has some great seafood.both are on the water not high on a hill. I stayed in Menton for a bit and got to know the area. My daughter lived in Antibes at one time for a couple of months.youbshould be complaint free in either place.

The correct answer would be yes and no :). There is a bus line (#100) that runs along the lower cornice and you could get off at the small Eze/Bord sur Mer train station. There is a bus that runs from that station up to Eze Village, but that bus does not run as often as one would expect. I believe it is the #83 bus but it only runs about once an hour (with no bus at the 1pm hour). Not sure there are any other lines running from that small station up to Eze Village. However, you also might want to consider just taking the #112 bus from Monte Carlo directly to Eze Village. We do not have the current schedules or info on the 112.

 

As to the walk (we have never done it ourselves) there is a trail and it is pretty difficult from the station up to the Village. Many hikers prefer to do it in the other direction :).

We just did the hike up ( and back down) from the train station. The path is bit crude in some parts so good footwear is a must. But it certainly was not the most difficult hike we have done. If you are active you can hike it and enjoy marvelous views. Even if you take bus don't miss this lovely place with it' s breathtaking setting.

It's another nice site..but if you put in generic towns, the website needs to know your desired mode of transportation. You have to play with it, with some knowledge of end locations and the various mass transportation options, to get the optimal answers.

That is not a stupid question, and stupid me does not have a definitive answer since we have not had a reason to go near the casino (there are actually more then one casinos in Monte Carlo) for years.

 

HOWEVER, if one reads the info for the web site I posted it does indicate that the last stop is at "Monte Carlo (Casino). :)

If I remember correctly from a trip we took on our own years ago, we needed to take an elevator from sea level up to the level of the notorious Monte Carlo Casino. If the #112 bus actually does stop there, that should be a relatively easy to locate landmark. I, along with envy4u would love to hear from any previous travelers who have taken this bus route from the Monte Carlo Casino to Eze, upper town level. It will make travel more efficient time wise if we know exactly where we need to be. The information we have always gotten from these boards, from Hank and others, has inspired confidence and has made travel much more pleasurable.

Not sure if you are talking about climbing up in Monte Carlo or Eze Village. But yes, there is only one public entrance into Eze since it is a walled town with few "gates." Getting from the parking lot to the entrance is not difficult, but once inside you do have to deal with slopes, steps, etc.

 

And I always like to add a comment about Eze. It is a nice touristy town (most of it actually closes during the off-season) but we think it is sometimes overly hyped here on CC. There are plenty of other places in the region that we think (and this is arguably a matter of opinion) are better places to visit then Eze. If you want to visit a walled city then we rate St Paul de Vence much higher than Eze Village on our personal scale. On the other hand, St Paul de Vence is quite a bit further from Monte Carlo and/or Villefranche then Eze. And I would further mention that for modern art lovers there is a very highly rated museum called the Fondation Meaght near St Paul de Vence. This particular museum taught me why I truly dislike Miro.....but many would disagree :).

There is a red brick path that takes you through the village. If you follow the path directly from the entrance to the garden, you can be up there in 10-15 minutes. Of course, it will take you longer since you will stop to look at a lot of things. You follow the same path down. So long as you stay on the path and follow a downward slope, you will get back to the entrance. Eze is small, no chance of getting lost.
