Advice on a Secret Majesty Upgrade

My DH and I are booked in a category Q room (deck 2) on MOS in April 2006 (4 night). I'm considering upgrading our cabin to a category F1 (Oceanview stateroom) without telling my husband as a little surprise since this is our first cruise and our 20th anniversary (not to mention the first time we've ever been on a vacation without the kids since we had them).

Here's where I need some advice. Is this an upgrade that's worth doing? The difference would be $180. Square footage wise, there really is no difference (3 sq. ft.) but it would add a window and raise us to either the 5th or 6th deck. Checking on Travelocity, the rooms available as of right now are 6094, 6594, 6596, 5596, 5096, 5598, & 5098. I'd like to know also is this category has obstructed views and if they have little portholes or an actual 'window'?

I'd like to upgrade to an SO on deck 9......but that difference is more than I can come up with on my own ($360). So.....what should I do? Keep the room I have and just be thankful we're even going or upgrade and surprise my husband?

If you think I should go for the upgrade.......is there any preference in what room to get?

Thanks! :)

I think I would go for it.

Not because of the window but because you can then chose the location which to me is much more important.

We once had the room at the end of the hall next to the disco on the Sovereign. That was a GREAT location for a small ship. IMO

Our history with booking gty's has not been good. We got what we paid for. Bad locations, but oh well, it's the chance you take.

Remember though that $180 could be you bar tab. (About 30 drinks).

Thanks for the quick reply Bobbie!

When we booked the cruise we chose the cabin we currently have.....it's not a guarantee. It's just WAY down in the bottom and WAY down a long hallway. lol As for the bar tab......we don't drink so that's not really a deciding factor. Most likely the only thing we'll have on our bill is a photo or two.

Ok......so I'll probably go ahead and upgrade. What cabin is a good one? They're all in the same vicinity.....but I do have my choice of sides (port or starboard). Is anyone familiar enough with the MOS to know which deck to choose?

Thanks for the input! :)

Sorry to disagree with the other responses, but $45 a night for a window is a bit much. That $180 would be a nice start to saving for another cruise. In addition, there's little, if any, difference in the decks.

I just checked the ship's layout, and I like Deck 5. It's really close to the shops and casino. A nice location.

I've been in B.O.B. cabins many times: Bottom 'o Boat, and I much prefer ones higher up in the ship.

I say go for it if the extra $$ isn't going to be a problem.

You know your DH better than anyone, so is this important to him, or would he rather have a shore excursion or a prepaid shipboard credit?

I would suggest moving up to deck 5. You are right in the middle and very close to the dining rooms, casino etc. We were on deck 5 on the Sovereign and it was perfect. We didn't book on 6 because some people on Cruise Critic said you can hear the joggers in the morning on deck 7.

I also dissagree. I've been on the Majesty a few times and there really isns't any difference between an inside cabin and an outside. The cabins are so small and the bed is up against the window so it's not like you might think that you'll have this great view. It's a very small window on that ship.

I'm going on the Majesty again in a few weeks and have an inside this time again. Going with another couple who never cruised before and suggested they go with an SO cabin on the 9th deck because they are a little concerned with the size of the cabins. If that is the case the upgrade is worth it. Don't do it only for an outside cabin.

However, either way you decide will be fine. Majesty if a great ship and you will have a great time.

We had cabin 5598 on the Sov. which I think has the same layout as Majesty. It was wonderful!! There was no cabin next door on one side, no cabin across the hall & just steps away from all the action! It also had a regular window, not a porthole.

The beds ARE next to the window, so you can't really look out unless you are on the bed, but being in the middle of the ship rather than the bottom was a big plus. I'd go for it if I were you.

Even if inside and OV cabin sizes are the same or close to it, to me, having a window makes all the difference in the world. I'm a tad bit claustrophobic so seeing that opening to the outside is helpful. Also, it's nice to know I'm on the ocean and I do enjoy gazing out and contemplating this amazing world.

Never have sailed in an inside. Just something about being able to pop up at any time and see the ocean and what's going on outside. Love being able to do that. I would definitely upgrade. Deck 5 sounds good and middle of ship as possible.

After this cruise you will know what you like better and everyone is different.

Have fun!

Whoop! Forgot to mention that inside cabins are, of course, DARK, and you can get your internal clock a little out of whack without a wake-up call or an alarm clock. There's not natural light coming into the room to help you wake up or know what time it is.

DH, who is a heavy sleeper, has a problem with this, because the dark room keeps him sleeping.

I feel the same way. Also the natural light coming into the room makes it seem brighter and cozier. My daughter on the other hand says it makes no difference to her.She is usually only there long enough to sleep and shower.

The o/v cabin does let the light in..We were on Empress for 5 nights inside..it was like being in a cave. I didn't mind but rest of our group had o/v and I felt it was a big difference. Since it is first time I think I'd bump up and enjoy it. Definitely go for Deck 5, Deck 6 is below promenade, can be noisy w/ joggers above you, even though they post a sign for no joggers until a certain time people want to get out early. How about if you go to Deck 8, some obstructed views but let light in and normally can run $20-$30 per person less.

I agree---I felt terribly claustrophobic in my inside cabin.

Add another voice for natural light! I personally could not cruise in an inside cabin. But obviously this is a personal choice, and many find the price trade-off to their benefit. Great thing about cruising, 'to each his/her own'! (lots of choices!)

Whatever you do...Keep the cat in the bag:rolleyes: ..

I upgraded us from an inside,to a balcony on our upcoming Mariner, midship deck 8.Then an aft came available..But it was deck 6.Corner...but some issues with a deck in front of it...I stressed out so much about making the switch...I ended up telling Dh what I had done..:o ..I could kick myself for that now:(

OMG Did I read right? 17 more days until your cruise? Wow, your countdown clock was over 200 days when I first came on this board. As far as kicking yourself, never look back. Think positive that you made the right choice. Not even sure what choice you made. Did you take the aft or not? lol

ok, I'm going to at least upgrade to a cabin with a window. What's the difference between getting a cabin with a window on deck 2 compared to a cabin with a window on deck 5 or 6? If I go for deck 8 (with the obstructed views), are there any windows that are between the obstructions that would have a better view than another?

Thanks for the input everyone! :)

I personally don't like Deck 2..too far down on the ship, but of course personal preference. I like being at least on Deck 4. On Deck 8 some of the cabins are between the 2 lifeboats so the obstruction is very limited compared to a cabin directly in the middle of the boat. I tried to figure out the better rooms. It was my calculations that some of these rooms are better. Hope my figuring was right as I booked one of them for myself! :) Can't find my whole list but these are a few that I remember, 8536,8036,8534,8034,8532,8032..Will try to find my list.

Then you will be sailing a lot less than we will! Seriously, is having a window worth $45 a night? Those of us who book inside cabins have the same meals, see the same shows, travel to the same ports as everyone else. The option is ten cruises in an inside cabin or seven with a window. I'll take the ten!
