Bob++ Posted May 29, 2015 #1 Share Posted May 29, 2015 Sadly this will affect many visitors to this country. The strike will add considerable pressure to all other means of transport and congestion on the road network may be considerable. The effect will be spread out on either side of the actual strike as management try to get trains to the right places. If you are arriving at any of the London Airports on those days, I strongly recommend that you book a coach or a taxi in advance. Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union will walk out for 24 hours from 5pm on Thursday, June 4 and for 48 hours from the same time on Tuesday, June 9. The workers, including signallers and maintenance staff, will also ban overtime from June 6-12.

Are the papers speculating that the June strikes are the first of others anticipated the rest of this summer or two-time June thing only?
sddsddean Posted May 29, 2015 #3 Share Posted May 29, 2015 No one really knows. If it gets settled, the strikes wil stop...if it doesn't, they could conceivably carry on through the summer. We'll just have to wait and see what happens. Simon

In Italy, strikes tend to be more general statements about political and economic conditions over-all rather than targeted action to force settlement of a labor dispute. diesel1973 Posted May 29, 2015 #5 Share Posted May 29, 2015 Just returned from Baltic cruise on Silly. There was a train strike on 5/21 in Germany. We had an excursion scheduled which involved train rides. Luckily the tour co. (Alla) was able to secure a van to complete the tour. I heard people talking on the ship that when they got off ship for their tour they were told tour was cancelled because of strike. Glad our co. stepped up!;););)

Bob++ Posted May 30, 2015 Author #7 Share Posted May 30, 2015 Hi bob, Would the effect Edinburgh to London trains and the Eurostar as well or just London local trains? Thanks Sadly - yes, pretty much all rail services will be affected. Here is the official information although it is not easy to sift through. http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/service_disruptions/99244.aspx These things tend to move fast and there could well be a settlement or a further postponement. There are further developments today. Mick Cash, general secretary of the RMT, said in a message to members on Friday: "Your negotiating team was invited to further discussions at Acas on the Network Rail dispute at short notice this afternoon."Discussions have commenced and our full team will be in London on Saturday morning to take the negotiations forward. "RMT is fully committed to achieving a negotiated settlement and will be available in London for discussions for the whole weekend and beyond in order to achieve a settlement." : RMT is the rail union and ACAS is an arbitration organisation.
