clothing for the Amazon

I asked the same question on the cruise fashion board. We're going in Feb 2016. Here are a few thoughts for excursions. Wide brimmed hat protects from sun and rain, not straw, plastic throwaway poncho, thin long sleeved shirt for cover up over vest or t shirt, protection for camera, comfy closed shoes..sprayed with water proofer...I've got an old pair I can leave behind, good bug spray with 100% deet (Ben 100), mosquito coils if you're going to stay in a lodge overnight, small towel to take on excursions to wipe hands, brow etc. Apparently light or bright colours attract insects, someone also took net to put over their hat because of stuff dropping down from the trees. HTH What ports ate you visiting?

Sandy,

Your advice is excellent for an intensive Amazon trip with lodges and canoes. If someone is just going there on a cruise ship up to Manaus and back down again, nothing special is needed. Mosquito spray yes, hat yes, poncho yes. We had all of this and needed nothing. It didn't rain in November, but it should have. The rain was late.

Different story on our in-depth lodge/canoe strip here we needed all of it in September.

Have a lovely time, we have to wait until Feb2016. Wold love to hear how you get on and what tours you did. We're hoping to stay a night in one of the jungle lodges by Manaus. Also what you ended up taking using and not using, wearing, not wearing, etc

Enjoy

Some suggestions from someone who has done the Amazon.

Something like a tilly hat that really covers your head.

Breathable shirts like one would wear for african night drives and lightweight pants.

If you will be going into the woods consider the clothing that already has DEET built into it. If not plenty of DEET protection.

If you are doing any rain forests than good/solid hiking shoes.

Sunglasses

Sun Tan Lotion

It's an amazing cruise.

Hi.

Is anyone going this cruise to the Amazon on this date? We are an English couple on this one starting in Miami. Would love to hear from you if you are.

Find the roll call for your ship & sailing date and there should be lots of people there. Enjoy your cruise.

Lots of excellent suggestions from the super experienced Keith and others. As noted below from my live/blog' date=' we did this same cruise earlier this year with Silversea. Check out the many details, visuals and ideas for this sailing, the many interesting port stops, etc. Below are a few of my photo highlights to get our "excitement" building high and higher. Feel free to post any added questions on that thread on the Silversea boards as I will pick up your needs quicker there. Happy to share as much as needed and be helpful for you.

[b']Bugs were not that bad for us.[/b] Fortunately!! BUT, getting some long pants and sleeved shirts made out of the light-weight nylon fabric that wicks and breathes well can be very helpful. Got some closing things from REI that is good with those types of things. Yes, lots of Deet protection!! If doing any Amazon jungle hiking, as we did, YES, for having good, solid, safe shoes that work well under those conditions.

Make sure you start early enough on your Brazil Visa. Maybe those from Canada are treated better. Getting that Brazil Visa can be a little costly and takes time for those from the USA. Plus, getting your proper shots, meds, etc., lined up.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

From our Jan. 25-Feb. 20, 2015, Amazon River-Caribbean combo sailing over 26 days that started in Barbados, here is the link below to that live/blog. Lots of great visuals from this amazing Brazil river and these various Caribbean Islands (Dutch ABC's, St. Barts, Dominica, Grenada, etc.) that we experienced. Check it out at:

Near the "Meeting of the Waters" at Santarem where the dark gray River Tapajos joins the brown Amazon, we made a stop at the town's water-side market area. Lots of fish and other colorful samples for local life here and the people from these Amazon River areas. This is the location where we saw the pink dolphins, too!!:

While stopped at Santarem, we had our charter/private boat arranged in advance. We headed into the back-water Amazon regions in search of nature, wildlife, unique scenery, etc. Our boat was fairly small, but with a powerful engine and covered to shade us from the harsh sun. Our skilled Amazon guide Gil Serique was on the look-out for birds, unique views and nature action. Our driver got us through very shallow and challenging areas. Like the iguana shown on the tree branch below? My Nikon D7100 did well, helped by using a 55-300mm Nikkor lens. Saw lots of special birds, unique animals, flowers, giant water lilies, etc., during this adventure exploration.:

From our very interesting visit to the small and totally-isolated river village of Boca da Valeria along the Amazon River, it was a very moving experience that reminded us how very, very fortunate so many of us, especially those on this ship, are to have great many life options and experiences. There was a single electric line running down the middle of the dirt path in this village and the two homes with satellite dishes, but things were overall fairly primative. There were lots of children begging for "one dollar", plus a local dressed up in costume ready to pose for pictures. Some of the children had small animals to add to the appeal and local color. Below is one example of Chris from Philadelphia with one of the local girls there. From advance reading/research on these CC boards, I knew to bring extra dollars, plus pens, pencils, gifts for the school, items for the the kids, etc.:

Here is a sunrise view as we sailed along the Amazon River. We were 800+ miles inland from the Atlantic Ocean, but this river is still very, very wide. Can you understand why being on the back of the Silver Cloud and seeing this view early in the morning would be so interesting and inspiring?:

This one visual says it all for the "Indiana Jones" experience we were enjoying as if we were in search of some South American hidden treasure during our hiking in this remote wilderness area about 60 miles north of Manus. Lots of varied nature views and scenic angles, etc., during this walk in the actual Amazon jungle.:
