My family and I are going on the Dream in Aug to Grand Cayman. Has anyone used a taxi or public transportation to get around the island?

Not a direct answer.....but.....you can rent a car for the day. Cheaper than any excursion. Go at your own pace. Find out of the way spots, secluded beaches, local restaurants. We do this often, makes for a relaxing day.

We have used both taxis and bus with no problem, they will get you to the beaches and back no problem.

We also have rented a car a few times and had a great time ( check online for company choices )

You will be able to see more of the island this way.

Don't forget since you have tender off and on the ship, it cuts down on your time ashore, which isn't usually very long for the Grand Cayman stop to start with. You also have take into consideration the extra time you may need if their is a lot of traffic congestion (not unreasonable, but you don't want to be back 5 min. after the ship has left:))

Can't remember the name of the company but it is a 5min. walk from the terminal (go left). We didn't have reservations, about $100 US, that included insurance.

Have a great cruise

If you want to stay on the West side of the island (Georgetown, Seven Mile Beach, Hell, Turtle Farm) you can easily do that via Bus or Taxi.

If you want to "tour" the rest of the island (Rum Point, East Side, Blow Hole, etc) you will need to hire a driver for the day or rent a car.

  • 4 weeks later...

The main bus depot is on Edward Street next to the library. That is about a two block walk from the piers.

You pay when you get off the bus. Drivers accept Cayman or US currency.

Technically the fare varies according to how far you go, so if you travel to the far end of the island if could be up to CI$4 (US$5) per person, each way. For most trips tourists take it is CI$2 (US$2.50) per person, each way.

Is there anything you can walk to? Or is it worth the bus trip to hit up beaches further out? First time and looking to just relax on beach.

If you want actual beach, then it's a pretty long walk (1.5-2 miles) in the very hot sun to the nearest beach club (Royal Palms).
