Smoking area on Equinox boat deck

Anyone know where the smoking areas are on Equinox boat deck, we have a balcony on deck 6 and I have read reviews of passengers not able to use their balcony due to the smoke rising from below.

Does this happen?

The smoking area is on Deck 5 Port Side (left). It's usually near the Hump area but may extend further back/forward. There also used to be (not sure if it's still allowed but think so) an area on the lawn (also Port Side) near the back bar.

I've read some reports but have not personally experienced any issue with smoke, perhaps I'm just glad it's not like other cruise lines where the casino seems like it has a fog machine set up. IMHO it would have to be a very calm day/evening for the smoke to drift up to a cabin above this area.

If you are extremely concerned, try and get a cabin on the Starboard side.

If smoke bothers you, change your room ASAP. We were on 6, second on the hump, right above the smoking area on last week's Equinox cruise. As soon as we opened the balcony door, you could smell smoke. We spent less time on the balcony than on any other cruise. Our cruise was full, so no room change was possible. We did note the issue with a visit to Guest Relations, and I asked them to let the Hotel Director know that it was a bad decision to locate the smoking area directly under the cabins. Yes, I knew about the issue before we sailed.

What is on deck 5 that makes it accessible for a smoking area?

Outdoor bar?

I dont smoke but quite like still our ecig (no nicotine menthol UK cert approved) now and then - dont like going into smoking areas but like my ecig now and then with wine etc..

Is there something in deck 5? Or is it simply an outdoor ashtray (which even I would hate)?

I copied this from the link below but there maybe other accurate information out there.

http://*****************/CruiseShips/SmokingOnboard.aspx?ShipName=celebrity+equinox

Smoking onboard the Celebrity Equinox

Smoking on the Celebrity Equinox is prohibited in all suites and staterooms including balconies. Cigarette smoking is allowed on the Port side of the Sky Observation Lounge, the Port side of the Resort Deck (Deck 12), Starboard side of the Sun Deck (Deck 14), and the port side of the Entertainment Deck (Deck 5) where tables, chairs and ashtrays are provided. The Sunset Bar up by lawn on the Starboard side also has a designated pipe and cigar smoking area. Signs are posted at the designated smoking areas. If in doubt, ask a staff member about where smoking is permitted.

Nothing out there. It's right outside the door from Bistro on 5.

If you want to be outside near something, there's the Mast Bar or the Pool Bar.

Yes, in my experience.

Yeah - kind of thought so

Ah well - no worries - dont like being in a smoking area as such - would perhaps go to the mask bar and have a wine and a puff of ecig but no biggie not bothering.

Wonderful not having nicotine control our lives any more

Three years clean :)

We had the balcony directly above the smoking area last year. It is just an open deck area. I was worried before the cruise about the smoke. That was wasted energy. We had no smoke smell whatsoever. There are no tables or chairs here. People have to stand which is a god thing as it moves them on. Its not a true gathering place as such. I will post a picture later looking down from our cabin.

But there was an old guy who parked himself every afternoon near the upoer pool deck - cigar in hand. That was very difficult and smelly. He seemed to take up a lot of space in a busy area, heavily tanned, gold chain, speedos. Blech.

On our cruise last week, there were the wooden lounger chairs with the orange cushions there, along with small tables between some chairs (with ashtrays on them), as well as the tall ash containers.

It was rare that someone was NOT smoking there.

Were these near the rail or located under the deck shade?

Under the cabin balcony, against the glass. It was open to walk over by the lifeboats. I had to lean over the rail to see people sitting, but people would stand at the rail and smoke, too. There would probably be less/shorter periods of smoking if the chairs weren't there. People would just sit there and smoke for extended periods.

  • 1 year later...

OH MY GOSH.... so glad I found this thread but unhappy that the "1A" cabin we were assigned falls into this category. I called X but they can't confirm if the smoking area is, indeed, under my balcony. I am HIGHLY allergic to cigarette/tobacco smoke... Unfortunately the ship is sold out. Let's see what they say.:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

Smoking areas on Equinox are:

  • Deck 5: Port Side, mid-ship on the hump to the left as you exit the interior right around the first lifeboat
  • Deck 12: Port Side, as you enter the Pool area from the mid-ship elevator lobby
  • Deck 14: Starboard Side at the Mast Bar

Hope this helps...

Thank you for confirming. I am now, officially, dreading my upcoming cruise. I wish that X had put such information on deck plans. Yes, I probably should have done better research. (thank you for those who will flame). This is turning out to be a disaster when it was supposed to be lovely.

Don't write it off yet. As others have pointed out, there may be no smoke. Also, "sold out" doesn't mean "no cabins available". Call your TA or Celebrity right away.

Also... Celebrity has the most restrictive smoking policy of any line. You won't find less smoke anywhere else.

Before you panic and try to move from the port side to the starboard side you should know that sometimes the smoking side is the starboard side. This can happen in Highwinds or bad weather or if the ship is taking on fuel. So just because you were on the starboard side doesn't mean that you will never ever ever have people smoking below you

This is my first Cruise Critic post' date=' so hope I am putting this question in the right place since it doesn't seem to warrant anew thread. Can smoke be detected lounging on cabin 6287 (port stern) balcony?[/quote']

I just did a quick look at a deck plan and it looks like you are aft of the open decks. I think you'll be just fine. I'm sensitive to smoke and I would book that cabin.

On S-class ships, the deck 5 smoking sections are forward and aft, meaning there are 2 of them.

I once had a cabin above the forward section one. I did not smell smoke. While at sea, there's always wind so the smoke cannot linger. During the day, these places are not popular since it's far from the bars that are open.

They are busiest during the dinner hours. People go to eat and step outside here before and after their meals to smoke. Hopefully by then you are at dinner yourself and you won't notice.

Ok, I regretfully disagree. Just got off the phone with the mis-nomered "Customer Service" who once again LIED TO ME directly to my "face" about the smoking areas sometimes changing. In short they said "tough luck, you lose" in no such words.

So hubby and I are now out a LOT of $ or we face being locked inside our balcony while others enjoy their "right" to smoke right under us.

HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE X. Never again.

What would you like them to say? There are (very few) smoking areas on the ship, and they're not going to move them for you. The locations could have been discovered with a bit of research. If you were "assigned" the cabin, you did a guarantee, right? You had the option of paying more to research and pick a room away from the known smoking areas. I'm not sure what you're expecting them to do from a customer service perspective, especially with a limited room inventory. The nature of the guarantee is that you gamble on the room location.

I would suggest you check the website morning, noon, and night for any vacancies that may come open and then call them immediately to switch to another room. You never know when the inventory might change.

As for customer service "lying" to you, they're going by the printed answer. The captain always has the prerogative to make changes based on extenuating circumstances, but I wouldn't expect someone working in a call center to necessarily know that.

I also think you're overreacting to what may be a non-issue depending on the weather and how many people may actually be smoking in that location at any given time. I've sat and stood in those areas many times and not been affected by people smoking 20 feet away, and I have a sensitive nose for it.
