Can anyone give me some advice on what to do in the area of 17th st, and what to look out for at the Hyatt 17th st?

For general info on Fort Lauderdale attractions check out http://www.sunny.org. In addition to restaurants (just do a search on this board for nearby restaurant recommendations) and shopping in the area of the Hyatt 17th street, you can catch the sun trolley (http://www.suntrolley.com) at the nearby Harbor Shops shopping center. It is cheap transportation ($1/ride or $3/day pass) to the beach and Las Olas Blvd (http://www.lasolasboulevard.com). IMO the best attraction in Fort Lauderdale is the water taxi (http://www.watertaxi.com) - you can catch it about 1 mile from the Hyatt at the Hilton Marina. If the weather cooperates it isn't a bad walk; if it doesn't or you have mobility issues take the sun trolley to/from.

It is a nice hotel with great rooms and an excellent staff. One word of advice; if you order food at the hotel (they have a limited menu of items, that you can call down and order, then go down an pick up when it is ready), it is quite good, but I do not recommend the deli sandwiches that they have in a display case in the lobby. The one I got tasted like it was two days past fresh, so if you need something quickly, go for the made to order food. There is an Outback very close by and a place called Mezzaluna which is more upscale, and lots of restaurants not much further. Publix and Total Wine just about 5 mins walk away. I would stay there again depending on the price.

We have stayed at this hotel a number of times pre-cruise and have always had a good experience. The only food we purchase at the hotel is DH's need for a cookie or two, otherwise we pick up a few items at Publix and keep things cold in the room fridge. There is a variety of relatively inexpensive restaurants in the nearby Harbor Shops center, and along 17th St. We enjoy Kelly's Landing for seafood - just be careful crossing the main street.

Check out the happy hour specials at Mezzaluna. Not wanting a large meal the night before the cruise, we walk across the parking lot and enjoy a drink or two and share a few appetizers.

We planned to stay at this Hyatt before our cruise this December, but got a better price at the Hyatt Regency Pier 66. However, we are staying at 17th St. post cruise.

If you do not have a car when you check in let them know The will bill you for parking even if you do not have a car. We stayed there twice without a car and was billed each time. It was no problem having it taken off but just an inconvenience .

Otherwise a good hotel to stay at.
