I suggest you go over to the Holland America board to discuss this question. But you need to tell which ship you will be on and perhaps a better definition of what is meant by Deck 1.

 

Even better, go to the Roll Call for the particular cruise you will be taking.

Deck 1 may be the lowest PASSENGER cabin deck, but there are crew cabins below you, and storage, and THEN the engine rooms! You won't hear engines!!!

The engines are pretty quiet - if you are near the stern you will feel and hear vibrations from the screws/azipods if there are any significant seas.
