Dress code for dinner in MDR?

Ryano is correct. Wear what's comfortable for you. Don't stress about it; jeans are fine. If you're so inclined, search for the threads on Cruise Critic about the subject...there's a great deal of discussion about it that may interest you.

My family and I are currently going back and forth between our first RC cruise or sticking with NCL. The inconsistency between what's appropriate for dinner and what's not is alarming lol. The last thing I would want is to be turned away at dinner to have to go change...

Wear whatever you are comfortable in. You will not be turned away at dinner.

The problem is the inconsistency from ship to ship and even inconsistency on the SAME ship. :rolleyes: One person might get turned away for wearing shorts and return to the MDR only to find many people wearing shorts :confused:

 

Stay away from sleeveless shirts, ball caps and flip flops if you are a guy and pretty much everything else goes these days. Dont be surprised to see ball caps even though they are prohibited though. You MAY or may NOT be turned away for wearing shorts. Based on my last experience in the MDR, even on formal night, probably not.

 

Dont be afraid to give RC a try. Their dress suggestions are just that. There are only very few prohibited items and even those get through the door most times.

With the continuing expansion of anytime dining, the MDR is not what it used to be. It looks like the masses have spoken about the need for more casual dining so I expect nobody would blink at a nice pair of jeans.

There is not as much inconsistency as you might think from this site. Just follow RCL's guidelines and you'll be fine. They request that you do not wear shorts to the MDR in the evening. The only "inconsistency" some people find in that is that they don't have fashion police rounding up people who wear shorts anyway, and escorting them out.

 

If you really want to ignore the guidelines, there's a good chance you'll get away with it, because thankfully, cruises are not run like police states.

Jeans will be fine in the MDR on Carnival.

 

As I mentioned in my recent review, IF I ever cruise Carnival again, I am going dressed very casual in the MDR on regular nights wearing "dress shorts" (talk about an oxymoron) and smart casual on the [not so] elegant night(s). This last cruise I wore a suit on elegant night and felt out of place, in addition the atmosphere did not provide me with that "cruise experience" I was looking for.

 

Nuff said.

jeans seem to be accepted but I have seen a few folks turned away with shorts. Jewel and Grandeur. In fact our table mate last year was discreetly told the second night that shorts are not acceptable. He wore jeans the rest of the week LOL

Jeans have never been "disallowed" in the MDR. Shorts, tank tops on men, are on the "please do not wear" list, and you may be turned away. However, enforcement can be very inconsistent.

 

I think the confusion on jeans also comes from very few people wearing in the Caribbean. They are just too heavy/hot for many people for comfort.

There is no confusion in that regard, I've never understood it but from reading posts here over the years there are thousands of people who are determined to wear jeans in the hot Caribbean...........

When you tell people you want to wear shorts in the hot Caribbean they say the ships are freezing and they walk around with sweaters clutching a thermos of hot chocolate, doing jumping jacks in line to stay warm.

 

can't win around here.

Even long ago there were casual AND smart casual nights. I never really saw a big difference between the two. I think, technically, smart casual required a sport jacket but no tie, maybe??? But I agree smart casual is gone pretty much!:)

I agree.... But again..... I forgot...Its really hard to get dress well for some people.... People forgot what dining experience is these days...So they do not give a ****....:D

RC's food isn't worth dressing up for. Maybe they should try a bit harder in the experience they deliver.
