GMRPHRN Posted September 18, 2015 #1 Share Posted September 18, 2015 I saw on the Glory specific forum that that ship is using cards with magnetic strips to open safe and CCL discourages using S&S card. Can someone comment on if any magnetic strip card will work? Can I bring for example one of the many loyalty Cards I have or something I wouldn't worry having with me? Miller_KC Posted September 18, 2015 #3 Share Posted September 18, 2015 (edited) If you can bring 2 identical loyalty cards then both cabin mates will be able to open the save without leaving the card in the room. adkcruiser Posted September 18, 2015 #5 Share Posted September 18, 2015 I use McDonald's Gift cards (with no value attached) that I pick up from the counter at McDonald's. Have used them or several cruises and never had a problem.

katiel53 Posted September 18, 2015 #7 Share Posted September 18, 2015 I've used old hotel room keys, zero balance gift cards, casino cards and anything other than my S&S card. All work with no problem.
dmdiver Posted September 18, 2015 #8 Share Posted September 18, 2015 We use an old Royal Caribbean SS card when we are on Carnival and an old Carnival card when we are on RC. That way, we know at a glance which is the room key vs. the safe key.
SadieN Posted September 18, 2015 #9 Share Posted September 18, 2015 Any card that has a magnetic strip will work. Only cards we've had issues with are old casino loyalty cards.

Richjoxyz Posted September 19, 2015 #12 Share Posted September 19, 2015 why not just use your room card? Pretty unlikely you will lose it. More unlikely that if found, the finder will figure out what room you are in. Even more unlikely that the finder is a thief and use it to enter your room and your safe! I guess it is possible... Is that the reason not to use the card, or am I missing something?
1midsun Posted September 19, 2015 #13 Share Posted September 19, 2015 We just use an old gift card We leave it I the desk drawer that way if one of us needs to get into the safe and the other isn't around we can still do that [emoji1] Sent from my SM-T705W using Tapatalk
CRJ700 Posted September 19, 2015 #14 Share Posted September 19, 2015 The reason not to use your SS card is if you have to have it replaced due to loss or failure, the new one won't open your safe.

Is that the reason not to use the card, or am I missing something? I originally asked the question in the Glory forum... I think you got it right. So someone that finds or steals your card can't enter both room and safe. Good call. Thanks Sent from my A0001 using Tapatalk
WLHyatt Posted September 19, 2015 #17 Share Posted September 19, 2015 I am confused by the thought that a replacement would not open it. If you lose the card you lock it with, no other card will open it anyway. Either way security is coming to your room, and I'd rather carry one card (well, two, because my wife's cards is always in my pocket).

You'll use the SS for room entry, bar transactions, restaurant purchases, casino activities ect. You are not going to have out the card that you used for the safe as often as your SS card. The chances of losing it or it becoming unusable are reduced. Edited September 19, 2015 by CRJ700
ASchaff Posted September 19, 2015 #19 Share Posted September 19, 2015 I always use my driver's license. It gets left in the room inside of a book.
levon10 Posted September 19, 2015 #20 Share Posted September 19, 2015 Does anyone know if all the Carnival ships have safes that use a card with a magnetic strip to open them?
Jana60 Posted September 19, 2015 #21 Share Posted September 19, 2015 The reason not to use your SS card is if you have to have it replaced due to loss or failure, the new one won't open your safe. In that unlikely event it is very easy for the Carnival staff to unlock the safe for you so you can reset the code. I've never used the room key for that purpose. I assumed there was some other reason for not using it. I wish they would replace all the safes with the kind with a combination.
Rare Jamman54 Posted September 20, 2015 #22 Share Posted September 20, 2015 Does anyone know if all the Carnival ships have safes that use a card with a magnetic strip to open them? No, many ships have safes with the keypad.

evandbob Posted September 20, 2015 #24 Share Posted September 20, 2015 The latest technology will have safes that can be opened by either your smart phone or by passing your S&S in front of it and letting the computer chip that will be in your unique S&S card act as your key. Sheraton hotels already have this technology, so I'm thinking Carnival may follow in about 20 years.

I sure hope I don't need my smartphone to open a safe - that's usually what's in my safe! :-|
