momof4boys Posted September 21, 2015 #2 Share Posted September 21, 2015 Almost all banks, credit unions, and even AAA in my area have done away with those checks. They use a card now that you buy....but every time you use it there is a fee and a fee to load more money on it. I tried it for my son in Europe about 5 years ago....never again. Also, many many merchants do not accept travelor's checks since their use is so infrequent. Cash or a CC is about the only way to go anymore. cateyes2u Posted September 21, 2015 #3 Share Posted September 21, 2015 I'm in CA., and you can still get them at most places listed above. I have found they no longer carry $20's, but no problem getting larger bills.

riffatsea Posted September 21, 2015 #5 Share Posted September 21, 2015 Traveler's checks are rarely used these days with the advent of ATMs around the world few folks carry them at all. You certainly don't need them on board the ship.
dioxide45 Posted September 21, 2015 #6 Share Posted September 21, 2015 My bank also recently discontinued them. I bought some to take on a trip to Aruba several years ago. I don't bother with that again. Just notify my bank of my travels and pull cash at the ATM. My bank reimburses ATM fees, to it also makes it fee free. Though the travelers cheques were fee free too. lizardhowson Posted September 21, 2015 #7 Share Posted September 21, 2015 Oh yea, I remember those - believe I might have used them a few times in the late 60s or early 70s. Do people really still use them ? Credit card to pay off Sign & Sail card ... Cash to spend on shore ...
pbsteve Posted September 21, 2015 #8 Share Posted September 21, 2015 i know many companies stopped taking them because they are easy to fake. do what the rest of the world does and use an ATM
cmptrwiz Posted September 21, 2015 #9 Share Posted September 21, 2015 Too easy to counterfeit in this day and age. Most businesses won't accept them.
cateyes2u Posted September 21, 2015 #10 Share Posted September 21, 2015 I rarely use them off the ship. I don't like carrying allot of cash. I get packs of $50's or $100's and when I need money, I cash them at guess services.

Rare l2f Posted September 21, 2015 #12 Share Posted September 21, 2015 (edited) We use Traveler's Checks when we cruise. Cash them on the ship. I know many places stopped them. Luckily my small local bank still issues them. I know at BWI airport there are 2 Travelex stores that you can get them. Not sure if all airports have Travelex stores though. riffatsea Posted September 21, 2015 #13 Share Posted September 21, 2015 Why do you use them when you cruise? Taking cash and leaving it in the safe is just as easy. I don't see the point?
jordanaire Posted September 21, 2015 #14 Share Posted September 21, 2015 (edited) Our bank still issues traveler's checks and I still use them on our cruises, as recently as this past January on the Freedom. You can cash them at Guest Services or in the casino. Edited September 21, 2015 by jordanaire

simplelife Posted September 21, 2015 #16 Share Posted September 21, 2015 These aren't used very much anymore. My credit union no longer issues them. Instead they offer "travel money" in the form of prepaid cards with Visa logo that can be used as a PIN protected debit card or as a credit card. RaiderFaninNM Posted September 21, 2015 #18 Share Posted September 21, 2015 Too easy to counterfeit in this day and age. Most businesses won't accept them. I have NEVER had an issue using them, ever......;) I use them because they can be replaced if lost or stolen, whereas cash cannot. True as one has a true accurate record of the amount you have, plus if something does happen you can get them replaced...... It is so difficult to get them these days as I know of one place here in town that still sells them............

Nic6318 Posted September 21, 2015 #21 Share Posted September 21, 2015 I use them because they can be replaced if lost or stolen, whereas cash cannot. That is why they have always been useful. They lost their popularity because businesses stopped accepting them not because they weren't convenient for the customer (if you didn't have to pay a fee). When you have an environment like a cruise ship that will accept them they are a great alternative to cash.
realjd Posted September 21, 2015 #22 Share Posted September 21, 2015 I use them because they can be replaced if lost or stolen, whereas cash cannot. Why not just use ATMs to take money out as needed? They even spit out the local currency at the bank rates. Or pay with credit cards where possible which have really good consumer protection policies and also use the bank rate to convert from local currency.
