Allergic Reaction - Hives

On his first cruise, as a child, my son was very nervous and worried the ship would sink.

He refused to attend children's club or leave our sides, even though his elder sister was happy to meet other children.

Maybe..just maybe a similar type of stress is affecting your child and causing the hives.

I would see a doctor and ask for something to alleviate symptoms rather than rely on limited supply of allergy medication  available on ships.

These types of questions can also be posted on the "disabled cruise travel" section of CC:

That's where one is more likely to find others with same/similar problems and solutions/suggestions.

We've had a problem like this that lead to an ambulance ride from the ship to the local ER.  Good news was that the local ER *and* (most importantly) our specialists at home ALL said that the ship's medical team did just the right thing.  One of our local top specialists actually said that what the ship's medical tead did was exactly what the major Trauma Center of our big teaching hospital would have done.  That was certainly reassuring.   The local ER simply kept him for observation for much of the day, and gave us new meds to take prophylactically and "extra just in case" for the rest of the trip.  We had to think long and hard about getting back on the ship, because we had a sea day coming up.  The ship's medical team also had to clear us, no surprise.

The ship was very good to work with in terms of special needs after that, as have been all hotels and other cruise ships.

Normal 1 (if you are still following) -  I've never heard of "hives in joints".  Are you sure that's what you had?

To all:  If you really think you have actual "hives" on your body, don't hesitate to seek medical attention.  This has the possibility of getting, er, "bad", quickly.  Better safe than sorry!

I once took an antibiotic for an extended amt. of time, and would periodically break out in what looked like a detergent burn.  Turns out the medicine makes a person more susceptible to sunburn.

My DD had been on a few cruises before her legs and arms broke out. We finally came up with a reaction to the detergent. For the next three cruises she brought her own sheets. After that she seemed to be over the reaction. Maybe cause she was older, maybe they changed their detergent. Who knows?

Same cruise line?

Same ship?

If same ship and/or same cruise line, it could indicate they changed detergents, cleaning r products used throughout the ship.  Pertinent if different line/ship.

Medical advice   for a specific person, is best  obtained from  their doctor.  Why not take  him/her to the doctor who knows  them best?
