Money spent going towards Mariners status

I am assuming this does not belong on the tipping thread. I am wondering if the money you spend on the HSC counts towards the total money spent during the cruise towards the Mariners state, i.e., a point for every $300 spent.

It certainly does :)

We are taking DD and DGD on a cruise. They have their own cabin in order to maintain sanity. On the check in page we indicated we would cover their HSC and any charges they accrue. Will that count too?

The Mariner FAQs say:

Onboard Spending Bonus Effective with cruises on or after September 18, 2009, one bonus Cruise Day credit will be granted for each $300 in eligible onboard purchases. This is calculated on the combined folio charges for all guests on the booking, regardless of who signs each charge and who pays the bill. Only the first two guests on the booking receive the limit of one bonus day for each day sailed; 3rd and 4th guests on the same booking do not earn the onboard spending bonus.

Are they on a separate booking number? If so, I would interpret that to say they get the credit for your spending. IIRC when I paid for a couple of excursions for DB/DSiL (on a separate booking) they got the spending credit.

Do tips added to bar bills count?
If you mean the 15% service charges, yes. If you mean cash, no. I don't think the bar slips I've ever signed had a way to add to them.

Unfortunately, it does not. Even if the same card is used for both staterooms the daily purchase credit stays with the stateroom. We had that happen on a family cruise with 4 staterooms all using my card.

Most things charged to your shipboard account counts, with a few exceptions. From HAL's FAQ:

14. Are any onboard charges excluded from the onboard purchases bonus?

All casino charges, cash advances, Future Cruise deposits, and associated fees are excluded. All other onboard purchases, for example, Hotel Service Charge, Beverage Service Charge, taxes, shore excursions and all gift items purchased online or through Ship Services count towards bonus Cruise Day credits.

The HAL FAQ says this about 3rd and 4th in the same cabin:

11. Do third and fourth guests in a stateroom receive cruise day credits?

Third and fourth guests in a stateroom receive Cruise Day credits for days sailed and for Alaska and Yukon cruisetours days as well as the suite bonus. Only the first two guests in each stateroom receive Cruise Day credits for onboard spending.

I wonder it that means it also applies for 2 people in a different cabin, even if it is paid by one credit card.

It has nothing to do with the credit card, it's tied to the booking number.

So if we put one booking in my name and the other cabin I my husbands name, would we get the cruise credits for both bookings?

How would you do that? The booking needs to have the names of your children on there. If Hal were to reward points on who paid the bill can you imagine how confusing it would be.

You would get credit for the charges to your booking and your husband would get vredit for charges to his booking. Your D and GD would get credit for the charges to the booking they were under.

They have a separate booking number, so I guess even though it goes on our CC, we don't get the cruise credits? Hardly makes sense

It makes sense when you think in the context of businesses that pay for their employees air travel/hotels and though the company pays, the traveler gets the FF miles.

Same on HAL. Though you may pay, those in the other cabin will get the days credit.

You both would end up with the same number of days as you would get the credits in one of the cabins and DH would get them credits for the other cabin.

If you had the same confirmation number for both cabins, you might have been able to get the credits (probably not) but the way it is you won't.

But if the bookings were in our names only with their names only as second persons in the cabin, their charges would go onto the main name on the booking, wouldn't they? Therefore, all charges would go on with my booking number or my husbands booking number

How do you book a cabin in your names only but have a person listed as a second one? I guess I'm confused as I haven't been in this situation. It doesn't make sense to me. If this were possible I'm quite sure someone would have figured it out by now.

What I mean is if I booked a cabin with my mariner number and had DD as the second person and DH had a cabin with his mariner number and DGD, wouldn't the charges for both cabins go towards the cruise credits for the main people, i.e. Me and DH

I think what is confusing us is perhaps you don't understand that both people in the cabin will get the same Mariner credits. If you and DH have a joint bill at the end of cruise of $1,200, you will both be credited the 4 Mariner Days. The same will happen for your DD and GD. Whatever days the two accumulate, despite the fact you/your DH will pay the bill, they will both be credited with the total days either/both earned.

That is correct.

It doesn't matter who pays. The days' credits go to the people staying in the cabin except possibly if there had been one confirmation number for both the cabins, 'maybe' you might have been able to get the credits. I don't think so but someone above suggested that might have been possible. Too late for that now, in any case.

IN other words it doesn't matter who pays for it ? I guess that is what is confusing me.
As it says in post #5:

This is calculated on the combined folio charges for all guests on the booking, regardless of who signs each charge and who pays the bill.

Each cabin has its own folio (bill) and the occupants of the cabin get the credits, regardless of whose name the booking is in or who pays for it.

Of course you can maximize the credits you get by charging as much as possible to your cabin. About the only things that couldn't be charged that way are the HSC and any purchases made by DD/DGD when you (or your DH) weren't around to hand over your card.

Ok, got it. I guess what we can maybe do is make sure we are with them when they want something and charge it to our room. I get it about the HSC. Sorry it has taken me so long to get it through my thick skull.

I think you were correct in your first assumption.

As it sits now, You and DH each share the credits earned by the spending in your cabin, while DD and DGD get the credits for spending from their cabin.

IF You booked it such that You and DD were in one cabin and DH and DGD were in the other, You and DD would get credit for the spending in that cabin and DH and DGD would get the credits for the spending in their cabin. You could still actually reside in the same cabins you are planning on now, but your card wouldn't work on your cabin door and DGD's wouldn't work on theirs. This way either you or DH will have cruise credits for all the spending, as it is now, you will only have the credits charged to your cabin, and all the credits from the other cabin will go to the kids who aren't paying!
