Is Caribbean Princess going to be late into Houston this morning?

I live in San Antonio while not Houston I also can count on one hand with fingers left the number of ice storms we have had in the 40 years I have lived here. SA is more likely to get an ice storm than Houston since we are inland to the west of Houston but at the same latitude. I use to work in Houston several weeks each month and don't remember any ice storms. I am not sure when the pax that posted the comment is talking about.

Dallas area 275 miles to the north does get ice storms on a regular basis almost every year.

About two weeks ago, we had terrible storms - baseball size hail shattered car windows, golf ball size hail in most of the area - it was really bad.

eclue:rolleyes:

We will NEVER sail out of Houston again. Worst cruise ever, morning of sail we had an ice storm and half the entertainment didn't make it aboard. What a bust....

Ice storms vary rare in Houston as it is a tropical micro climate. You may want to avoid Boston and New York for ice, Texas, New Orleans Florida for hurricanes, California gets those pesky earthquakes, I think that leaves you Hawaii...oh I forgot volcanos.

We're in Sugar Land and had no hail at all with that storm and neither did our son in Katy.

Not really enough cruises sailing from New York (and particularly Boston)

during the time of the year that ice is possible --- to even worry about.

Ice may be infrequent in Houston, fog is not.

I'm on the January 17 sailing. The captain announced that we will be arriving in port tonight (Saturday) at 11:00 PM. He said we should be cleared and passengers will start getting off right at 7:00 AM on Sunday. As it stands now there won't be a weather delay for the Jan 24 sailing.

I would be interested in why they are arriving tonight instead of tomorrow morning. Present weather forecast for today is sunny, 56 high, 38 low and WNW 5 mph wind. Sunday is partly cloudy, 69 high, 58 low and SSE 13 mph wind. I am not sure how much side wind the CB can endure going up the Houston ship channel. The way all cruise ships are built, side winds are their enemy particularly in a narrow channel like Houston ship channel, Mahogany Bay and Belize. I hope it is not a problem.

On the roll call someone posted that the current captain of the Caribbean Princess is leaving and a different captain will be on board for the 1/24 cruise. Perhaps the reason the ship is getting in tonight rather than tomorrow morning is because the captain wants to make sure he doesn't miss his flight home. As I'm on the 1/24 cruise, I'm happy it will be back early.

I wonder why they're coming back tonight? The weather is just great right now...a little chilly, but sunny with not a cloud in the sky and little to no wind. I'm all for erring on the side of caution if there are genuine weather concerns, but I'm not a fan of them coming in early when it isn't necessary. It really puts a damper on the last evening.

They are probably coming back tonight because the winds are much calmer than they are forecast to be tomorrow. Apparently, the Captain is going on leave and wants to make darn sure he gets off the ship tomorrow. It is a shame because they have to close the shops and casino and revert to the Texas bar menu.

At 8:15pm the CB cleared the cut between Galveston Island and the Bolivar Peninsula so she will be entering Galveston Bay and then the ship channel. They show her ETA as 1:30am, but she'll probably beat that.

No so much "back" as early. It is a fairly regular occurrence for the CB (or any other cruise ship turning around in Houston or Galveston) to speed up and arrive the evening before if the weather forecast for the scheduled early morning arrival time indicates possible delays or other issues.

Princess doesn't care about fog and delays.

The reason the ship is leaving is that the government subsidy

to use the port is ending.

If they cared about fog and delays -- they had plenty to learn

from when Emerald was there -- they could have put Carribbean

else where.

But, follow the gravy train...
