kzocruiser Posted December 31, 2015 #1 Share Posted December 31, 2015 I really don't like carrying a lot of cash when I'm travelling. It seems like I remember hearing that you could charge the amount you want to tip the butler or concierge to your cabin, and get a chit that you could put in a thank you note and hand to them. Has anyone done this? We'll be on the Dawn, if it makes a difference. TIA.

ptuder Posted December 31, 2015 #3 Share Posted December 31, 2015 Yes - we did this earlier in Dec on the Escape. We made sure we had the full names of the staff we were wanting to tip. Guest Services initially put them all on 1 charge and then apologized and stated they needed to do them individually. Regardless, easy way to use the TA money to tip the folks who helped us during our cruise.

Thank You for this information, we are sailing in just over 3 weeks time and it will be a big help to uis on the bringing cash front.
Rare sparks1093 Posted December 31, 2015 #6 Share Posted December 31, 2015 This is how we've left extra tips for our steward so I don't know why it wouldn't work for a butler (we needed to know the steward's name).

jaja Posted December 31, 2015 #8 Share Posted December 31, 2015 I have done it....but they never gave me a copy....so I trust it went to the proper staff ;)
johnql Posted December 31, 2015 #9 Share Posted December 31, 2015 Also, tips (any tips) can be paid using OBC. Note: the DSC is not considered a tip by NCL.
mommyto2kids Posted December 31, 2015 #10 Share Posted December 31, 2015 This is great info. We are Canadian and have a good rate for our cruise next week. It will save me money if I can pre pay my tip by buying OBC and then charging the tip to the account.
tombec1 Posted January 1, 2016 #11 Share Posted January 1, 2016 I wish I had known this. I was on the Getaway over xmas and went to the casino ATM to pull out cash for the steward, concierge, butler and matre' d. Does guest services give you cash, or something like a voucher to give out??

Does guest services give you cash, or something like a voucher to give out?? This is the way we always tip our butler and concierge. They give us a copy of the signed ticket and an envelope to put it in. We write a thank you note on the envelope. I always bring the business card of the people I am tipping to the desk to make sure it is going to the correct person.

Good idea as I always forget their last name and the service desk people really don't help much. I can understand they don't know the stewards last name but they don't even know the butler or even the concierge. Or they play dumb (maybe they want the tip).:p jk
Buford T Justiice Posted January 1, 2016 #15 Share Posted January 1, 2016 You can also tip the counselors at Splash Academy this way, too.
NCLfamily Posted January 1, 2016 #16 Share Posted January 1, 2016 Very impersonal surely?
Rare All-ready2cruise Posted January 1, 2016 #17 Share Posted January 1, 2016 Very impersonal surely? Not really, we do it this way as well and put the receipt in a little card that says, "Thank you for your Awesomness", and we make sure we give them the card and thank them personally. So it's very personal, and they seem to like it since it goes right to their account and they don't need to worry about hiding the cash. Super simple. mommyto2kids Posted January 1, 2016 #18 Share Posted January 1, 2016 Very impersonal surely? It doesn't have to be. If I give them a nite that says thank you and I've added this much $$ to our account I can't see how that's any less personal than cash?
mypleasure Posted January 1, 2016 #19 Share Posted January 1, 2016 I find handing tips out to be very embarassing. Most likely because I am English. The advice I have read here is perfect for me. I will get the business cards and full name of our steward, go to the guest services desk and ask to pay the cash to their accounts, and bring with me some thank you cards. I will be much more comfortable doing these things.

I'm glad to hear of this alternative way of doing it, which seems to benefit both me and the steward.

No awkwardness at all in handing the envelope to someone, whatever country you come from. :)
