E&B Posted February 18, 2016 #1 Share Posted February 18, 2016 DH and a have decided not to do an excursion in St Thomas. Our plan is to get off the ship, do a little shopping and then reboard enjoy the empty ship. Most ports have shops as soon as you debark, but ice read comments here about going into town to shop vs staying at the port. How far is the walk into town? Is a taxi needed? Ms411 Posted February 18, 2016 #2 Share Posted February 18, 2016 There are shops at both docks. Depending on what you want to buy, you may not have to go to town.
MAGNUM PI Posted February 18, 2016 #3 Share Posted February 18, 2016 Been to St Thomas many times. One of our favorite ports, for shopping, too. There are many shops, within easy walking distance of the cruise ship dock. Everything from upscale jewelry stores to convenience stores. We have not taken a taxi, just walked the area. O2B@Cagain Posted February 18, 2016 #4 Share Posted February 18, 2016 There are a few more stores at Havensight than at Crown Bay. The shopping area in town is also the historic district. Some of the stores are worth visiting just for the old architecture. There are also historic buildings such as the synagogue and Camille Pissaro's boyhood home which are fun to see. Also bars and restaurants to fill the void.... :) From Havensight, it is a one mile walk along the waterfront. From Crown Bay, it is a bit farther and not as picturesque, so probably better to take a taxi.
coronawomen Posted February 25, 2016 #5 Share Posted February 25, 2016 I've been going to St. Thomas since 1994 and was introduced to the House of Rajah which is downtown. Since then I've purchased many many items even from back in the states here. 100% trust this store and George the owner. If you go, ask for him and tell him Renee from Minnesota sent you. We even renewed our vows for our 25th in St. Thomas and upgraded our rings with him, awesome deal.
sail7seas Posted February 26, 2016 #6 Share Posted February 26, 2016 When we used to dock in Havensight, we always walked to Charlotte Amalie, downtown. From Crown Bay, it is further and not as safe a walk. We take a taxi if docked there. Beside Havensight, you will see Yacht Haven and there are some nice stores there in addition to all the shopping at Havensight.

sail7seas Posted February 28, 2016 #8 Share Posted February 28, 2016 If you have never been to St. Thomas before and walking is okay for you, walk into Charlotte Amalie. The stores at Crown Bay and Havensight are satellites of the stores in town. Sadly the bad economy hit St. Thomas badly and some of my favorite stores closed but if you want to shop, go downtown, IMO.

OCruisers Posted February 28, 2016 #10 Share Posted February 28, 2016 If you are docked at Crown Bay, you really will want to take a taxi into town to shop! ;)
sail7seas Posted February 28, 2016 #11 Share Posted February 28, 2016 If you are docked at Crown Bay, you really will want to take a taxi into town to shop! ;) I agree. It is not the safest walk from Crown Bay to Charlotte Amalie. A jitney taxi is about $5 pp and well worth it, IMO
