Luggage Question

I have always flown to my sailing ports so had to abide by the rules of the airlines... This is my first cruise sailing out of my home town of Vancouver to alaska, then disembarking back in Vancouver.

 

I would love to use my nicer luggage that I would not normally check at the airport. Is there any rule about the amount I have to check? I will check my garment bag and larger suitcase, but want to carry on two duffles and one rolling. Think I will run into a problem?

I don't think so. My husband and I have taken a number of Caribbean cruises with several different cruise lines (including 2 on Celebrity) and we always drive to the port from our home in Atlanta, GA. Therefore we have been not been burdened by airline luggage restrictions and have carried everything we wanted to make our cruise more pleasant including a bag for our favorite pillows, etc. No cruise line has ever had a problem with our "excess" luggage.:)

The only limit to your luggage is how much your cabin can hold and where will you put your bags.

 

Last cruise my partner and I had 2 large suitcases, 2 medium suitcases + carry on. (We fly business so were still under the limit for the airline anyway.)

Just remember that your carry on luggage has to fit in the baggage screening machine, just as it would at the airport, so size counts.

Unless you bring a steamer trunk - your luggage will fit through the security machine. Hand carry on as much as you want but remember that until your cabin opens - you will have to lug it everywhere with you. Not a big deal if you like to board a bit later in the day.

Marsic, also remember that you have to "carry" your carry on bags until the rooms open up. Could be a couple of hours after you board.

Interesting answers - The airline rule is a purse and computer type plus a carry on under a certain size - per person. If you get an attendant who notices the amount of your luggage you will be required to check it - either at the desk or the gate. Probably at the gate and absolutely positively if the flight is full. i would give it a 50/50 call.

Except the OP is not flying. This does seem like a lot of luggage though, especially since you have to keep it with you on the ship waiting for the rooms to open. How many people will be with you to help board the ship?

You will not have a problem as long as it fits through the scanner. Also, the poster who mentioned about the rooms opening up brings up a good point. If you intend on getting on early you will have to lug things around until 1 or 1:30

Scanners for carry on are not as big as those for checked luggage. On a HAL cruise, where the cabin is ready for you when you board, I saw a couple trying to carry on all of their luggage so they could get a head start on unpacking, but their two large suitcases wouldn't fit the scanner and they were told to give it to the porters.

Each guest is permitted to carry a reasonable amount of personal property (including luggage) aboard the vessel; however, for your comfort and convenience, it is recommended that you limit the number of pieces you take.

 

It is a good idea for guests to pack a small carry-on bag with their travel documents, a change of clothes, bathing suit and any medications they may need. That way they don't have to wait for their checked bags to arrive in their stateroom. This is also helpful for the last night at sea. Staff collects the guest's bags the night before they leave the ship so an overnight bag to carry off night clothes and toiletries is recommended.

 

Luggage may be locked ONLY with a TSA approved lock.

 

Any carry-on luggage must be able to fit through the x-ray screening machines. These machines vary in size from port to port, however generally they are similar to those found at airport security check points. Guests wishing to carry their luggage with them during boarding should note that their stateroom may not be immediately available to store their luggage.
