llcruisers Posted May 1, 2016 #1 Share Posted May 1, 2016 We will be on our first cruise with NCL. We love cruising but have cruised exclusively with RCCL until now. We'll be on the Getaway on June 5 out of Miami. I've been reading all the various reviews on the Getaway and am starting to get prepared for our cruise. So far, this is what I have to bring that is unique for NCL: 1) UBP List of Drinks to try - printed from a thread on this forum 2) Extra hotel card to keep the power on 3) Long pants and tennis shoes for the rope course/rock climbing Please add and many thanks in advance. I welcome any tips for a newbie to NCL.
Pitzel Posted May 1, 2016 #2 Share Posted May 1, 2016 Magnetic clips and hooks. We used the clip to hold all of our important papers and the hook let us hang up lanyards and other items near the door so that we wouldn't forget them. The magnets will stick to just about any wall surface.

For the ropes course - you might need to have a shirt with sleeves - no tank tops (this was the policy on the Escape a few weeks ago so I think it would apply). Also - you can wear shorts for rope course and for rock climbing and with the warm weather you might want to. Have fun!

LrgPizza Posted July 21, 2016 #8 Share Posted July 21, 2016 Can my dh wear sperry slip on shoes on the rope course? As long as the heel and toe are enclosed, the brand doesn't matter. :)
KarlChilders Posted July 21, 2016 #9 Share Posted July 21, 2016 2) Extra hotel card to keep the power on . so will just any random hotel key work for this?
EleventyBangBang Posted July 21, 2016 #10 Share Posted July 21, 2016 so will just any random hotel key work for this? It's a mechanical switch. Any credit-card sized card will work. I used a grocery store club card. Although in practice, I don't know that it really made that much difference. You need your card to get in the door anyway, so at this point you're already standing by the switch with a card in your hand. I guess you could make the argument that doing this would allow you to keep your card on a lanyard, thus making it harder to accidentally lock yourself out. eatdrinkfly Posted July 21, 2016 #12 Share Posted July 21, 2016 just curious - what's the allure of keeping the power on when you're not in the room? i always find that the AC takes no time at all to chill the room because they're so tiny... of course, i've been raised to always shut off lights when you leave a room to not waste energy... so this is one thing that people mention that always confuses me. and i know that on the new ships, having a card in will mark your room as "occupied" so the room steward can't come in and clean/turn down the room... so that seems like a real drawback to doing this. snownow Posted July 21, 2016 #13 Share Posted July 21, 2016 A stack of ones... service gets soooo much better with a stack of ones and UBP. :) Extra water bottles, not trying to start a debate with the new policy. Just a good idea.
xriva Posted July 21, 2016 #14 Share Posted July 21, 2016 just curious - what's the allure of keeping the power on when you're not in the room? . We keep it on if we are trying to recharge our electronics - cameras, iPhones, laptops. When the power goes out, it all goes out - even the plugs. The Merrill Posted July 21, 2016 #15 Share Posted July 21, 2016 I've heard there are not a lot of plugs in the rooms on the ESCAPE so a power thingy with extra plugs. We will bring along wipes to clean surfaces like door handles, light switches and in the bathroom. IMHO of course .. to each his own! :):D
Weluv2cruise2gether Posted July 22, 2016 #16 Share Posted July 22, 2016 Personal sized bottle of hand sanitizer for all you are traveling with! Yes they have pumps at the restaurants and casino entrances, but you touch so many things like the stair railings, elevator buttons etc. Durning our March cruise on the Gem, we had a Norovirus outbreak causing St Maartan not to allow the ship into port. Due to the crews extra cleaning and our good hand hygiene DH and I did not get sick. We each went through a travel sized bottle on that cruise! asubaru Posted July 22, 2016 #17 Share Posted July 22, 2016 Don't forget to wipe down the remotes<g> I saw a program on TV regarding germs and hotel rooms. TV remotes and phones harbored the most germs. Of course, this is one study and no doubt debatable. I do those and the phones first Is it a good preventative? Doesn't really matter....makes me feel better :-) I've heard there are not a lot of plugs in the rooms on the ESCAPE so a power thingy with extra plugs. david_sobe Posted July 22, 2016 #18 Share Posted July 22, 2016 A few things I make a point to pack every cruise A sweatshirt. Even in the summer it can be freezing in some areas of the ship. Swim ear. Former swimmer and get water in my ears. This drug store wonder clears it out. Zip lock bags. Take your money, key card, etc with you. If you get wet or go in the water your money and items stay dry. Most important thing to bring: Positive attitude :)

I also bring battery operated votives/tea lights to use as nightlights. :) Edited July 22, 2016 by peg013
