BaileyandBella Posted May 4, 2016 #1 Share Posted May 4, 2016 My husband and I are cruising to Alaska in an inside obstructed cabin. Our son, DIL and 18 month old granddaughter will be nearby, straight across the elevator bank. We got an email offer today for a balcony for $180 pp for my husband and I. I would love a balcony, but it may be much farther away from our kids. Trying to weigh to pros and cons......any input??
knbcruisers Posted May 4, 2016 #2 Share Posted May 4, 2016 I'd say take the balcony. The views are great and all of the adults can enjoy the balcony. Also it gives you a place to keep the baby while she naps or in her pack and play and still enjoy scenery.
knbcruisers Posted May 4, 2016 #3 Share Posted May 4, 2016 Also if the weather is a little iffy you can still enjoy the views from inside
moki'smommy Posted May 4, 2016 #4 Share Posted May 4, 2016 A little privacy can be a nice thing too. I'd take the balcony.
idahospud Posted May 4, 2016 #5 Share Posted May 4, 2016 We were in the exact same situation last year on our Alaska trip. We took the upgrade. Didn't regret it a bit.

BaileyandBella Posted May 4, 2016 Author #7 Share Posted May 4, 2016 Could we (the grandparents) request a crib for our cabin, too? Is it too late? We cruise in 5 days.

Just thinking out loud :) This is our 5th Alaskan cruise and I know that during actual cruising, it's FREEZING on the balcony.
moki'smommy Posted May 4, 2016 #9 Share Posted May 4, 2016 Worst case--you are inside looking out thru the balcony doors to enjoy the scenery. You can request a Pack and Play crib for your room. If shoreside says no or says it is too late, ask your steward on the ship. If steward says he can't (sorry, our steward said no to every request), ask guest services. I have a hard time believing that every crib on the ship is in use. We were told that we couldn't have a blanket....they don't use them any more, they use the duvets. And 2 other requests that were automatic "no." Funny how guest services can turn a "no" into a "of course."

Rare Coral Posted May 4, 2016 #12 Share Posted May 4, 2016 I would take it. I am sure they can find a crib for your room.

DrivesLikeMario Posted May 4, 2016 #14 Share Posted May 4, 2016 AK is one place you really want a balcony. You'll never be out on the balcony saying, "Wow, I really wish we didn't spend that extra little bit of money." ;)
BaileyandBella Posted May 4, 2016 Author #15 Share Posted May 4, 2016 We are going to take the upgrade! For those that got a crib for your grandchild, did mom and dad just carry the sleeping baby back to their cabin later in the evening?
tonyweir Posted May 4, 2016 #16 Share Posted May 4, 2016 It's $360 for the upgrade. Could that be better spent elsewhere? We did Alaska twice, once in an inside and once in a balcony. We'll do balcony from now on. You can watch the scenery go by in the AM laying in bed!
wheezedr Posted May 4, 2016 #17 Share Posted May 4, 2016 What's an inside obstructed, I'd have thought all insides are obstructed. Wondered that myself until I saw the correction. I would take the upgrade, a balcony just makes the room seem bigger and will be nice when you all get together.
BaileyandBella Posted May 4, 2016 Author #18 Share Posted May 4, 2016 I just wish the balcony cabin itself was bigger, like with a sofa etc...oh well. I called and they were gone for the day, hopefully tomorrow morning we will get the confirmation!
easyboy Posted May 4, 2016 #19 Share Posted May 4, 2016 I will take the upsell esp. if it's deluxe. It's Alaska. Your son & family can enjoy it too.
Lucky TGO Posted May 4, 2016 #20 Share Posted May 4, 2016 Go for it a balcony in Alaska is a must. Tony
knbcruisers Posted May 4, 2016 #21 Share Posted May 4, 2016 We traveled once with DD SIL and GS when he was 1. If it's a true pack n play you can move it easily as it sets up in 30 seconds. Otherwise just carry her back when whenever mom and dad go to bed. We babysat one or 2 nights so mom and dad could have adult time. Another bonus of the balcony! kylea_s Posted May 4, 2016 #22 Share Posted May 4, 2016 It's pack n play not anywhere near the size of a crib. It can be moved and or stored when not being used. Take the balcony. All adults will enjoy it and you will never be sorry.
BaileyandBella Posted May 4, 2016 Author #23 Share Posted May 4, 2016 The cruise is showing sold out, so how are they able to offer us another cabin? Just wondering....

If there is another inside cabin in the same category that your kids are booked in -- that is closer, ask to move them to it at the same time. Lurdes777 Posted May 4, 2016 #25 Share Posted May 4, 2016 Just curious how far out you get an offer for an upgrade? We are also booked into Obstructed oceanview and would not mind and upgrade.
