Carnival unexpectedly added another port to my itinerary...why?

I understand preferring a sea day, when the added port is nothing to be excited about. There's something calming and beautiful about being surrounded by the sea, and the activities will be different. However, I think it really is best to look at the bright side and take advantage of fewer people on board.

I could be wrong (and often am)----but I believe that Freeport is an area which has repair facilities. It could be that the ship will need a "tune-up" while there. It is a nice area when there are no downpours, such as we had on our last stop there.

 

 

My one cruise that stopped in Freeport in 2012 was on a day it was pouring as well. We pulled in at about 7:30am and they announced all excursions for the day were cancelled due to the rain. By 8:30 it was clear and sunny, I would have been pissed except I did the same excursion privately for less money and with less crowds!

I love sea days too but would do like others suggest and make this another sea day. Another thing I like to do when in port is sleep in, let the crowds die down and then go to the port when there is no mad rush to get off the ship. Just set foot on land for an hour or two and come back to the ship when it is still relatively empty.

 

Most times when I don't want to get off the ship, I end up changing my mind and enjoying the port after all. Good news is you can stay on or get off, glad there are no hard and fast rules, its vacation.

I wish on my last cruise they would just keep adding ports and never return back to original port. :D

This is Carnival Elation out of Jacksonville on March 11, 2017. It was supposed to be just Nassau and Half Moon Cay but now they have added Freeport. Fun days at sea are not the same at all when the ship is in port!

 

That seems quite far off. Are all the sailings going to have Freeport added?

I am on the April 3 Elation out of Jacksonville and I got the same letter about adding Freeport. Good news for me as I love Port Lucaya and will make my way there on our cruise.

I like Freeport now, more than years ago. Even the area at port has improved a bit. Off to Lucaya I go to look around, and hit the casino there. Not a beach person, but there's a beach there too.

I take a taxi to Taino beach and spend a few hours at Tony Macaroni's for grilled conch and kalik!

I really appreciate all the replies! I am getting married on this cruise and have really planned every detail, so I was thrown off by this announcement at first. However, after reading your replies I have decided to try to make the best of it and I checked into some excursions. I found one that sounds fabulous! Has anyone ever been to the excursion called, "My Bahamian House: A Select Retreat"? If so, I would love to know how your experience was. Thanks, again!

My last cruise HMC was canceled because of weather and we had an extra sea day. I personally look for itineraries with as few sea days as possible and I did not enjoy having that extra sea day. But everybody is different, right.

Better than a sea day as you have the ship mostly to yourself.

You can make your own "sea day"...simply stay on the ship! Sea days are chaotic and crowded....and I've had my fill of them! I think one sea day is ample....and if I want a nice day on the ship, we skip a port......and Freeport is a good one to skip!

This would be like a dream come true for DH! [emoji5] He lives for port days, and I live for sea days! You could always opt to make the new port day into a "sea" day by just staying onboard.

My guess they have maintenance to do on the ship and a lot of it gets done in port

Adding a port will be a minor inconvenience with respect to the big picture of life.

 

I see you have adjusted to it, now keep looking for the positive. After 38 years of marriage, I can assure you this is trivial!

It may be a maintenance issue. They do their dry docks in Freeport.
