Is the Haven worth the upsell?

We had one of the inside ones (12500) it was great having the two bathrooms, but I really liked the one next door, 12502, the wrap around window was amazing. When we originally booked the balcony the price per person in the DOS was around $3100. I hope that someday we can cruise in a DOS end suite!!

We have sailed in the Forward DOS on the Gem twice. We loved it! Booked in a PH on Gem and thinking about outright upgrading to DOS for that trip. Tomorrow we are on the Escape in a forward PH (won a bid)....Once you go Haven its hard not to go back and that is being said by someone that doesnt really use the Haven Area much!

Bottom line is its a personal choice. My view was against HAVEN until i actually experienced it by winning a bid. Now we decided to cruise less but go Haven. That does not make us right or wrong it is really a personal choice.

That’s our personal choice as well. For us, it’s quality over quantity. I, personally, do not find cruising outside of the Haven to be a relaxing experience. While others go on vacation for parties, excitement, new experiences, etc., a mark of a good vacation for me is relaxation. It may mean we cruise every two years instead of annually, but that’s okay for us.

Do you mean an OS on 9 or 10 forward? The DOS on Gem are mid-ship.

I feel exactly the same. Last year we were in DOS on Epic. This year I have 4 mini getaways to LV and FL which is less than half the cost as the cruise last year.

But I am ansy to start searching for that cruise for next year.

ABSOLUTELY LOVED YOUR SUITE!!!!!!

Is the Haven worth it?

This thread was started a couple of years ago. Probably some changes since then. I think Patty is a perfect example of now being able to bid on Haven (and all cabin) upgrades. She and her husband had no intent of booking their Suite (Patty, correct me if I’m wrong) and was able to do so once their bid was accepted.

Today, it seems that NCL gives all the perks and goodies with the Haven.

-Drink package

-Dining package

-250 minutes of internet

-credits for excursions

If you’re going to take advantage of any of those packages, the price differential becomes much, much less.

I sort of figure that...

-Drink package was worth $50/day x 7 x 2 passengers=$700

-Dining package I estimate to be worth $100 x 2 passengers for 3 specialty dinners=$200

-$150 for 3 excursions

-$150 (approx) for internet

So, right off the bat, that’s a $1,000 off the top. Plus, the Haven usually comes with a significant amount of OBC ($300 is the number I see the most).

The Haven Bar, the Haven restaurant, the Butler and the Concierge are just bonuses.

Plus, if you book a Haven Spa cabin, they throw in Spa package.

Up to you whether all that is worth it or not.

Haven was definately worth the upgrade price. We only got the perks that came with our original booking. We have 2 specialty dinners due to being platinum. I priced out the suite, if we had booked it outright it would have been over $10k for the week. We got it for around $5k.

Thanks again (all the Pat's on the Gem) for opening up your home away from home to us for that magical hour of touring with the private reception, to fellow CC'ers on this lucky Roll Call ... I hope we didn't "trashed" your suite, poor RS had to clean up afterward. Much obliged for sharing - seeing is believing, moving from graphicguy's AFT balcony up to Pat/Jim's OS and then up to Deck 14, ending at yours. What a "Behind The Scene" tour we;re lucky to have.

The Dawn's Garden Villa is something out of this world when we got to tour back in 2003, loved to see that again when she come back to NYC later. Our next cruise, as currently booked - Escape's 2018 Halloween Special, with a shortened 2 night stop in Bermuda.

  • P.S. on old computer ... nothing wrong with a 12+ years old off-leased Dell laptop, parts & memories upgraded to keep up, recently recommissioned to run Linux OS Betsy since it's sluggish to keep with Windows OS, better than a Chromebook - a little heavier, tradeoff - tons of HDD storage & cloud backup (unlimited w. a lifetime *.edu account)

Why all this talk about Operating Systems and DOS is long gone and buried (it has been more than twenty years).

Not OS (Operating System) - rather Owner's Suite (i.e. H3 on the "Gem") or DOS (Deluxe Owner's Suite) on the ship - not to be confused with Disk Operating System as in pre-Windows PC-DOS or MS-DOS in the 1980's - similar "initials" ... all for a good laugh. ;p

If you were an owner, and you had a suite, why would you not make it a deluxe suit?

That’s a great price and a phenomenal Suite. I’ve never seen that sort of luxury on land or sea.

You guys were such great hosts to all of us, allowing us in your suite and then throwing a party. As MKING mentioned, appreciate your generous and kind hospitality.

Thanks, again!

We were pretty spoiled!! This was our 2nd Deluxe Owners Suite, the first time was on the Dawn. The Dawn doesn't have the Haven, but the crew did make us feel very special.

Even though this is an old thread, a couple of quick thoughts should you face a similar decision:

1.) If you can get a Haven upgrade for $500, seriously consider it. This is a huge opportunity to try out The Haven inexpensively. If you end up not liking it, you did not spend a lot for the opportunity and will never feel the need to do it again at full price. The problem, for almost all of us that have done the upgrade, is that we won't willingly go back to a non-Haven room. It's a wonderful experience.

2.) Try for a room within the Haven. There are a number of "Haven Rooms", providing the privileges, that are not within the Haven -- but elsewhere on the ship. IMHO, these rooms do not have the same impact due to distance. Some folks, however, love them.

3.) The Haven differs a bit between ships. The Horizon Lounge on the Bliss and Joy offers 2 stories of beautiful forward viewing -- great for places like Alaska and Panama Canal. But that's not available on all NCL ships. One thing that is common for all ships is the private area behind locked doors with lounge, bar, pool. The thing I really appreciate about this is the ability to join in on all the ship activities and craziness. But when I wanted some peace and quiet, it was available.

Susanr613, it depends on what you want to do during the cruise and what you already have booked for meals. The Haven on the Epic opens up a huge amount of extra space to you, including the Posh balcony and bar, the Haven bar itself and best of all in our view, is the Haven Restaurant. You also have the run of the Courtyard area with plenty of loungers, the small pool and a couple of lightly used hot tubs (compared to the ones outside the Haven).

Food-wise, you can have all three meals in the Haven Restaurant including superb breakfasts and dinners that will rival most of the specialist dining venues. If you have already got something like the UDP/SDP that may dilute some of the value.

There are lots of other items such as the priority lounge on boarding and the reserved seating in the main theatre. Again, if you already have the priority boarding from somewhere and don't expect to go to the main shows these will also dilute the value.

So, the value depends on your booking, your preferences for space and a high degree of privacy and if you feel that these balance a grand-worth of cost to you. For us and for many who have experienced the Haven it is no contest - go for it.:)

Totally agree with this post. For me, the Haven is worth the extra money but not for everyone if it breaks the bank.

We are also in an Aft balcony for our December cruise. Like you, we don't have a lot of "extra" money at the moment. A lot of little life surprises recently..new car...my in laws are needing to come live with us due to health reasons...just unexpected stuff. When we got our offer it was SO tempting...we are going to stay in our Aft and we're really happy with that decision...could we swing it, yeah probably...but it would be tight and we hate that feeling. The Haven will surely be there when it's a little more feasible for us...whatever you decide I hope you have a wonderful vacation.

Re #3 - there are common things but Jewel class Haven do not have a bar in them and depending on what you mean by lounge, that may not apply either if thinking of a lounge like on Escape or Bliss.

Norwegian Getaway on 01/17/20

Can anyone tell me if they except your upgrade offer do we get to enjoy the Haven or just the room? Do we get to board and not have to wait in line? Spa services, meals and drinks in the Haven? or do we just get to enjoy the upgrade room and go to the buffets?

you get to enjoy the Haven, once you enter the port no one knows you upgraded - look for Haven signs for priority boarding. Enjoy the restaurant and bar (if Patrick is still there he makes amazing cocktails!)
