jayscore Posted June 9, 2016 #1 Share Posted June 9, 2016 (edited) I truly understand the appeal of the larger ships for some. For myself, a cruise is more about the ambiance of the sailing, not the attractions offered. These mega ships are fascinating to me, but aren't what I sail for. Am I alone with this thought?:o Edited June 9, 2016 by jayscore Spelling
LPYRCRUISER Posted June 9, 2016 #2 Share Posted June 9, 2016 I think for younger people, particularly with children, they have great appeal. when I cruise I just want to relax, sit in the sun, read and watch the world go by. don't need all the bells and whistles for that! Sitzmark Posted June 9, 2016 #3 Share Posted June 9, 2016 Big ships are a compromise between going on a cruise or going somewhere else on vacation for me. I have no interest in cruising on a little boat unless it has sails.

TerReuv Posted June 9, 2016 #5 Share Posted June 9, 2016 I agree with you. While these huge ships are amazing and I wouldn't mind taking a look at them, I am happiest relaxing, reading and enjoying the sunshine. We go all the time at work and in our lives, I enjoy cruising because it is relaxing. In fact, I will take it a step further that I don't like that they now have more internet packages where folks can stay connected. I really enjoyed seeing others interacting (I am a big people watcher when not reading) instead of having their faces in their phones. While cell phones are great, I think things have gotten out of hand when people pay more attention to their phones than others around them. (Wow, I really am starting to sound like an old fuddy duddy aren't I?)
meatloafsfan Posted June 9, 2016 #6 Share Posted June 9, 2016 Extremely large ships don't hold a lot of appeal to me. I may cruise them only because they have some newer features (restaurants, activities, etc.) that look interesting. I did love the Dream back in 2011-2012 and would love to sail the Magic and even the Breeze. But the Vista? It's bordering on "too big". The Oasis, Allure, etc. are out of my league for sure. vwrestler171 Posted June 9, 2016 #7 Share Posted June 9, 2016 I do want to sail on Allure one of these days, just to try it out. That said. I love the bigger Carnival ships such as Breeze. I do love sailing on the smaller ships, but I do like the newer amenities as well

These mega ships are fascinating to me, but aren't what I sail for. Am I alone with this thought?:o Yes I agree with you 110%. They are very cool, but to me the ultimate in cruise ships is around the Spirit class. I go for the sun & sea, and some decent food. Not for bumper cars, sky rides, ropes courses, etc. They should've stopped at waterslides (which I do enjoy). Cruising is about getting away from it all, not getting in to it all. Now would I go on a mega ship? Sure if the price, timing and other factors were right, yeah. I actually found The Splendor too big for me!
maldenmusic Posted June 9, 2016 #9 Share Posted June 9, 2016 I don't think bigger is better necessarily. I am fine with the Fantasy class of ships-big enough for me.
evandbob Posted June 9, 2016 #10 Share Posted June 9, 2016 Is Vista a mega ship? I'll be sailing her in November. I just got off the NCL Breakaway that holds 3900 passengers, is that a mega ship? If so, I like them. In fact, I stopped sailing Carnival's small ships back in 2005 or 6 because I thought they were too old then. Maybe saying I like the newer ships better is more accurate. If Carnival ever had a new 2200 passenger ship constructed, I'd probably try it at least once. But those old vessels, never again.

Jenna1983 Posted June 9, 2016 #13 Share Posted June 9, 2016 No interest for me here. I actually have one cruise scheduled for this fall and after that no idea when I'll step foot on another. The mega-ships are a def no.
cruizinator Posted June 9, 2016 #14 Share Posted June 9, 2016 I much prefer any ship in the Spirit class size. A perfect compromise to mega malls and fantasy class ships.
Trumpster Posted June 9, 2016 #15 Share Posted June 9, 2016 Won't sail anything smaller than Magic and Breeze in the Caribbean as long as I have small kids. In Alaska and Europe, maybe.
asalligo Posted June 9, 2016 #16 Share Posted June 9, 2016 My experience is that the larger the ship, the less I enjoy myself. I am not into the frills though. I enjoy a good show, but ropes courses, shopping and ice skating rinks do not entice me, and 27 restaurants on board only interest me if they are all free. GeorgiaMomof4 Posted June 9, 2016 #17 Share Posted June 9, 2016 I guess we will see next February. We cruised the Glory and then the Dream and then went back to smaller ships like the Fascination, Paradise and Sunshine. We are booked on the Magic for February and won't have kids with us that trip. We did love the Dream and especially the Ocean Plaza area at night with the Blackjack Band to entertain us but I didn't really like the crowded feeling I got on the Lido deck and at the shows and such. We've really enjoyed cruising on the smaller ships but several of those were without kids (except the Sunshine and they love it for all there is to do) so we didn't need a lot to keep us entertained. I'm anxiously awaiting this Magic cruise just to see if the bigger ships are still a good for for us. We may end up sticking to the smaller ones, but I don't like that most of those only do up to a 5 day cruise. By the way - I loved it before the internet packages got more affordable too. That was one week that I knew I would have my teenagers' attention without their phones being shoved in their faces.
cruizinisthebest Posted June 9, 2016 #18 Share Posted June 9, 2016 I've yet to sail a mega ship but have nothing against trying it out for size. Lol. I'm happy to get on any ship if it meets my needs and goes to the places I want. I think the variety is awesome myself. Choose what you want. But that's me. As far as the Internet package offerings, I don't see why that would bother anyone. We always get the Internet package now that they offer them. Yet doing so hasn't ever stopped me from talking and socializing on the ship with fellow cruisers. That's one of the best things about cruising for me. And being connected has never stopped me from doing it. Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
asalligo Posted June 9, 2016 #19 Share Posted June 9, 2016 If you do like the mega-ships, sail them now because mark my words, one day one of these behemoths is going to sink and I do not care how many lifeboats you have on board, you cannot get 6,000 guests and 2,300 crew off a boat quickly. The day of the mega-ship will then be over.
riffatsea Posted June 9, 2016 #20 Share Posted June 9, 2016 We are also not interested in the giant ships! We have most often sailed on the Spirit class ships and think they are great! It is true that they don't have all the extra bells and whistles but we don't care! We still enjoy them. Last fall we were on the Conquest and I think that is as large as we are willing to go! gupebreedr Posted June 9, 2016 #22 Share Posted June 9, 2016 You might say that I'm old school and believe that "more is not always a good thing". I prefer to sail on a ship between 75,000 and 150,000GT. I don't need all those special activities, just a casino, a pool, sauna, hot tub, steam room and good food and I'm a happy Sailor.... . Just sayin'........:D

So 6000 pax and 2300..won't be able to get off a mega-ship like Oasis....but....4000 pax and 1500 crew will be able to get off a smaller "mega-ship" like Vista, should god forbid anything like you are suggesting was to happen? They were checking or texting on their phones so often that they actually missed a large portion of the movie. I love my phone too, but it has robbed a generation of the ability to pay attention. Later they will learn when the phone should be put away or turned off to enjoy a moment, but they are not at that point yet.
