SDHockeyDad Posted June 17, 2016 #1 Share Posted June 17, 2016 I haven't seen a recent thread on this and want to make sure that we are able to cash traveler's checks on board at no cost. Before I get lambasted for suggesting something as archaic as travelers checks I think they might be the best solution to get the cash we need on a port-intensive itinerary on the Adventure on July 2. There are several different currencies used on the islands and most want US dollars anyway. I think we will have high fees on the ATM on board and I don't feel comfortable carrying a bunch of cash when I can have a safer method. I have already called AAA to make sure I can still get them which was a little embarrassing in itself. Many thanks.
grandgeezer Posted June 17, 2016 #2 Share Posted June 17, 2016 I cashed traveler checks, last month on Celebrity Silhouette, at Guest Relations, no problem. I would like to think RCL would do the same.

It's like a pre-paid card. I have never used them but imagine the ATM fees would apply. You can still buy them and cash them on board. What you can do to save a few $ is write a personal check up to $200. You can do that once for each bank account. That could save you some fees. A guest may cash one check per cruise as follows: •One check up to $200.00 USD. •Only checks written in US dollars which are drawn against a US bank can be accepted. •Guests can no longer cash a personal check at the Casino cash desk; they can only do this at the Guest Relations or Guest Services Desk. •Guests can only cash one personal check per bank account per cruise. Maybe someone who has used the ATM's onboard can provide insight on what the fees are. That will help your decision on how much to take with you. Ashland Posted June 18, 2016 #6 Share Posted June 18, 2016 No fee on RCI to cash them... but now it's getting harder to find them...let me know where you end up getting them. I prefer to travel with them too....I even cashed them when we were in China...at the Bank of China for the Yuan I needed as necessary....I'm one of the few that will miss them if they stop offering them as an option. lhm0204 Posted June 18, 2016 #7 Share Posted June 18, 2016 ATM fees are more than made up for by the better exchange rate. Exchange rate on ship stinks!!! at an ATM, you get the current bank exchange rate. always pays to use the ATM !!!

I thought the question and subject here was the cashing of TC's onboard ...Not sure why if cruising on Adventure the OP will need any other types of currency than US$ for the ports she visits...We just returned from a B2B on her and certainly every port we went to did. American express has a locator on their website to purchase them. https://www385.americanexpress.com/wheretobuy/landing The reason they are harder to find is many merchants don't honor them. There were problems with counterfeiting in the past.
Rare JamesEM Posted June 18, 2016 #10 Share Posted June 18, 2016 I have switched from Travelers Checks to pre-paid debt cards, back to your question, you should not have any problem(s) cashing Travelers Checks on your cruise.

Can you withdrawal cash onboard the ship with those pre-paid cards? I've never tried it so was curious. Tell Clare hello. Hope you are both doing well. davekathy Posted June 18, 2016 #13 Share Posted June 18, 2016 We always take Travelers Checks. I get them free from our Credit Union. I always cash them on board at the Guest Service desk. Sounds like there's still a few of us that prefer to use them.
