NCL and Dimed

It does get tiresome hearing all this. But, you see the same thing on all of the cruise lines.

If you cruise even a couple of times, you should know about the charges. If you want to calculate your cruise vacation cost down to the last nickel, you should know there will be extras.

Anyone who's travled a lot knows there are additional costs associated with traveling.

Airlines have fuel sur-charges (BTW...since the fuel prices have dropped so dramatically, the fuel surcharges have stayed). Want a better seat with more leg room? Gonna cost you. Etc!

Oh yeah...that hotel rate you were quoted? That isn't the real per night rate. Add another $x0 to that nightly rate to cover everything else. Want room service? It'll cost you a room service fee, plus a tip to the staff who brings it to you.

I've sailed RCCL, CCL, NCL, HAL, Celebrity. They all figure out a way to add to your cash outlay.

So, you can complain about it. Or, find another way to spend your vacation dollar.

You want to really vacation on a budget? Drive to Gatlinburg. Book $20/nite primitive camp site, and pitch your tent. No beverage packages nor any dining packages either. I'd advise against tipping the bears, too!

]I agree to some of what you say' date=' how about the the thousands of people who did read the T&Cs for the promotions they were given as part of their purchase and the T&Cs changed, they go on their cruise and either have to fight for what they paid for, or not get it and leave upset.[/color']

There is nothing wrong with expecting communication of changes to be provided.

How many times do the folks on here read the T&Cs and the guest contract before each sailing?

according to Birdtrvels, that's called "smart business".

All cruise lines do the picture thing getting off! You are on vacation things like that shouldn't irritate anyone.

Cruiselines make money off pictures!

Celebrity is very good not to block the exit of passengers from the ship. I generally organize private tours and need to exit the ship ASAP. I don't appreciate having to wait for people to have their photos taken. Sometimes I just step over the ropes.

Considering Spirit Airlines is the lowest rated domestic airline in customer satisfaction, it's not exactly a compliment to NCL when the 2 companies are compared for their similarities.

Lowest rated customer satisfaction may very well be true according to numbers. In my case that hasn't been true!

Maybe 2 issues in over 20+ flights. That is a 90% rating for me. I just don't believe people understand what they are purchasing.

Same for NCL understand what you are purchasing , will lead to better customer satisfaction.

To put on the squeeze for revenue, NCL - like other cruiselines - have to first fill up the unsold cabins first, especially beyond final payment cutoffs. Current management side tracked on not discounting cabins on a last minute basis and came up with last minute "no frills" rates on select itineraries - tweaking their pricing models ... upsell fairy busy unloading those Haven staterooms and taking calls with offers (it used to be, don't call us - we'll call you.)

On the revenue front - NCLH's casino operations in all 3 divisions going for a new system to strengthen & boost its flow of silver dollars & halves, quarters, dimes & nickels, down to the pennies ... going forward. As a whole, Q2 results will be firm in 10 days and then booked - forthcoming financials & forecasts should be very interesting.

I vehemently disagree. Leaving is not the only way to change things. A good example is the "no more carry outs" from NCL food venues. At the same time, there was going to be a room service fee for all meals (they even did so on a few ships for a bit) and they changed it to not charging for continental breakfast. As stupid as I thought NCL was on both counts, I gave them a lot of credit for reversing so quickly; they did listen and act on the complaints.

I like NCL overall but there are dozens of things I don't like. I have written a few letters over the years and often voice my opinion over the phone. I have never threatened to leave or been rude. I will continue to voice my displeasure and will continue to sail NCL.

I feel the same way. If one doesn't like the business practices of a company, don't give them your money, as it is the only way to change things.

Well put. Simply going to other lines will solve your problems vis a vis NCL --- but letting them know why you prefer other lines might make them think about cleaning up their act.

It is very easy to avoid by going around and if they try to coax you over, just say no thank you.

You are exactly right. People have to speak up. Funny thing is, when we do speak up, the cruise line isn't nearly offended as the some of the people on the NCL board.

Bottom line is if you don't like the product, then don't use the product...no one is forcing you to cruise NCL. Lot of whining here.

I agree with the general advice there, but on the other hand we are all members of a cruising message board so we've got quite an interest in the good the bad and the ugly parts of cruising. Seeing posts like this with lots of differing opinions definitely help me in choosing between cruise lines. I've only ever cruised on NCL and I have another booked in October/November (Still excited despite the issues!), and I'm considering switching lines. This definitely opens my eyes up and forces me to consider other lines.

Bottom line is that you control what you pay for the cruise. We prefer things done the way they are on NCL and of course other lines are doing very very similar. We don't drink, don't gamble, do most of our own excursions....we don't have to end up paying for things we don't want anyway. BTW, this upcoming 14 day on the Dawn is our 9th NCL cruise and we have had a wonderful time each and every time. We have never ever been surprised by an unexpected charge, not once. Their suite perks and their Platinum tier benefits are the best in the industry, btw.

Totally. I plan on eventually trying most, if not all of them. Maybe after I get a raise and more vacation time ;)

NCL has some amazing things going for it despite my agreement with the money issues. The Gem was my first cruise and I knew very little about cruising so I was surprised that certain amenities and flexibility given by NCL wasn't the norm across the industry. Set dining times sorta horrified me at first!

Suite perks, yeah.

Loyalty program? Not so much. Take a look at RCCL.

NCL's Latitude's program is a bit of a joke.

Wow! Those are really nice things that really don't cost much, but are actually desirable.

Next year, no cruise for me. If I do a cruise the following year, it will be with a different line. I have only done Carnival in the past, but I'd like to try Celebrity, RCCL, or Princess. Let's see if the grass is greener.

Wow, thanks for sharing. Royal Caribbean has some good perks. I like how, unlike NCL, RCI keeps giving additional benefits to longtime seasoned travelers. On NCL once you hit platinum, you're pretty much topped out.

WOW, where in the world did you (OP) plagiarize that from? Your post was about as insightful as "caution: contents may be hot" stating the obvious, and repackaging, or in your case regurgitating someone else's thoughts...

You talk about spirits air's approach to selling seats. When they are consistently the bottom feeders of the airline industry. Some business model to follow.

I would have enjoyed your original perspective, on what should have an original post with a provocative spin.

BTW, how many other screen names do you have? It's quite a first posting.

It's called smart business.

Or bait and switch

Anyone who booked expecting mville to be complementary should have been grandfathered

Only those that booked after the change should have to pay for it

That's good business

I agree with you.

Purchasing things and then finding out they've changed them before you sailed or during your sailing is not good business.

It's more like quarter and dollaring now if that's even a word. Forget nickel and diming.
