Queen Mary 2 passing the Voyager of the Seas At Sea

When we where on the Queen Mary 2 in March 2016 (12/03/2016) we passed the Voyager of the Seas between Sydney and Brisbane.

 

Queen Mary 2 was bound for Brisbane and Voyager Of The Seas was bound for Sydney, Australia.

Or is it not protocol when it is a different cruiseline?

Perhaps if they were closer or it wasn't an appropriate time of day (early morning) or the captains were (or were not) on the bridge to make a decision. I have been a on cruise where ships of differing lines have done it and also when they haven't.
