"How Do They Know You're 21?"

I don't know all the facts on this but I am reasonably certain that I saw in a cruise video I watched that a parent can go to guest services and give permission to their "child" over 18 but under 21 to consume at least beer (and maybe other alcohol) while on board. If this is your desire, you may want to check into it further.

Not in the US. There are some itineraries in Europe where the drinking age is 18 and then some cruise lines will make exceptions. However I don't know if Carnival participates in that. But I can tell you with 100% certainty that it is not allowed in any way, shape, or form in the US.

I believe it was a beverage waiver the parent had to sign and now that I have rattled my memory a little bit and searched I realized it was a video from a Norwegian Cruise Line cruise that I seen it.

So NCL yes, but it appears Carnival no. Sorry, my bad. :)

Yep, her birthday is actually mid-September two weeks before sailing. She's always been a huge rule follower and is really scared of any kind of confrontation if she tries to get a slushy, fruity blended drink - and I don't want to spend the trip escorting her when I finally have a fully independent "grown up" on my hands. ;)

Then there should be no problem. Make sure Carnival knows her birth date and has her S&S card properly coded. If not, she should be able to take her driver's license to GS and have it corrected.

Yes, if the parents are on the cruise with the young adults, they can sign a waiver for beer and wine, on NCL.

My 17 year old niece was served drinks on an NCL cruise. She figured she'd try her luck in the casino and they let her play. She won some money, tried to cash out and then they confiscated her winnings.

The S&S card is also coded if they are 21 .A waiter can tell just by looking at the card . If your DD has a drink package then it is definately flagged as under 21.

If she turns 21 during the cruise. She still will be considered as 21 for the whole cruise.

Bottomless Bubbles is for soda, Cheers is for alcohol amongst other things.

That's what I was pointing out. Kamloops said if they had a drink package that it is definitely flagged as being under 21. That isn't true because you can have a drink package for soda and be over 21. If you buy the Cheers package, you have to be over 21. The bottom line is that if they scan your S&S card and you are under 21, they will know it because of the age you gave them when you booked the cruise. One way or another, it shows up. If you try to use someone else's card, your face and the picture that comes up don't match.

Yeah I agree in all points. Their post really confused the bejeezus out of me. That's so not true that if you buy BB you're automatically flagged as being under 21. Where do people come up with this stuff?

While one or two might walk by, we have seen enough instances where a drunk kid vomits in the pool. The mother actually replied that it was part of growing up. Turns out it was the second occurrence. They were on the pier with packed bags the next port.

I guess the mother was still in the process of growing up as well.

actually, yes, ncl allows this on cruises from the us. the parent must accompany the 18-20 year old to guest services and sign a paper to allow the son/daughter to drink. beer and wine only.

Previous poster was referring to NCL which they later came back and clarified. I was referring to Carnival. Carnival does not allow this.
