I am on Celebrity Eclipse in September. I know what to wear on chic night but what do all you ladies wear for dinner in the evening , do people get dressed up in nice dresses or is it more smart but casual.

Mrs Gut likes to put on the best bib and tucker, she doesn't get the chance too often at home.

 

But do what makes you comfortable, it's not really hard to comply with the dress code.

Having only sailed on princess where we always predominantly wear ball gowns.

 

I try and decipher what chic means, so here's what I would do.

A nice pair of pants or skirt with a funky top.

 

Sometimes one of us would wear a tux-combo with a small-top hat.

Nice dress pants with a waist-coat.

etc,etc.

 

Never afraid to mix it up.

 

CHIC,do they mean French Parisian chic or what,

Nice dress pants or skirt with a nice white (blouse) shirt topped with a leather studded jacket,and a French studded beret.

 

We think completely out of the square.

 

Suttle lines and silhouettes

Mix and match.

Dosent need to be expensive,one or two classics get matched with lots of funky-chic stuff.

Celebrity no longer do formal night they have changed to chic which is confusing. I do have my ball gowns for that its just the other nights don't want to come out too glam if people are wearing jeans and a casual top:)

I haven't seen a ball gown on a ship in ages (as another poster suggested), but to each their own. Things have really changed over the years...especially the dress code. Just know that you will not be turned away, regardless of what you wear. (well, don't wear your p.j's) lol. I usually wear a cocktail dress and on casual nights, I wear slacks and a nice blouse. Don't stress it. People wear all different things. No one cares. :) Just have a great time. :)

I didn't actually see any mention of being turned away,but there you go.

So back to the op's question.

What is chic on a 20/30 year old is not chic on someone older.

 

In my opinion chic is not jeans and a blouse, that is everyday street-wear.

But,But jeans and a nice blouse topped with a Jackie'O pill-box hat,starts to move into what I consider to be chic.

 

But that is my opinion only.

I will say think outside the square.:)

A "ballgown"? Not so much.....evening gowns or cocktail dresses...sure! Even less than that is fine nowadays.

 

Most cruise lines have relaxed the dress "code" for the "formal" nights...mainly due to airline luggage restrictions.

 

If you wish to glam it up, go for it! You won't be "out of place" at all. If you prefer not to bring fancier clothes, that's ok, too.

Sorry I did not mean ball gown don't want to look like something out of beauty and the beast more cocktail dress lol. I am in my VERY early fifties but don't want to look like mutton dressed as lamb. I like to dress for my age but earlish just whatever my daughter or 25 says I look good in, not into showing anything I don't need to which may spoil the picture.

For dinner in the main dining room on other nights nice casual clothes are fine -- just no shorts.

I love those flimsy black dress pants that you just pull on, worn with very dressy tops to mix & match throughout the cruise. They are very comfortable, easy to pack and wrinkles fall out quickly. I bring about 4 pairs of those pants and 1 top for each night and then mix & match. I also bring a light sweater or jacket for those cool evenings and if the air is too cold in the dining room. What to wear in the evenings is easy -- it's what to wear for during the day that always throws me.

Might check the Cruise Fashions forum. But these days a pair of nice black pants as mentioned above with tops that you might see at Chico's or even good white jeans or black ones with heels or snappy sandals and fun knit tops are good on casual nights. Do bring something for the frigid dining room like a cardigan or wrap scarf.

I have sailed on Celebrity in 2014 and 2015. I saw ball gowns/formal length gowns both times. I also worn one and hubby wore a tux. I will continue to wear formal length gowns. I hardly ever get to dress up like that so I will take advantage of it and continue to do so. If others don't want to that's up to them.

Ball gowns are for balls such as inagurals or debutante balls where ballroom dancing is expected. Yes, some women still wear evening gowns which tend to have a lot less bulk below the waist and are meant for formal occasions such as opening nights at the Opera or Symphony and cruise ship formal night diñners. A cocktail dress is very fitting for most of the lines that still have formal nights when any escorting male is wearing a suit or tux. These days formal is often left to the passengers to decide and many women wear dressy separates. The new "chic" or "gala" nights are more modern and in keeping with a vacation type wardrobe. If you love formal, wear formal. Some of us had to do that pre-retirement and prefer a slightly more casual chic night now with clothes that take us from pre-dinner cocktails, through dinner and on to a show, dancing or after dinner drinks.

If you choose to do formal night, palazzo pants with a dressy top is simple and elegant.

There are many to choose from online. Here is just one.

For other nights, a nice sundress, or a pair of nice capris, and top with a pair of dressy sandals, is fine.

 

Once I left half my clothes at home hanging in my closet and I made do.

 

Don't stress over the clothes. No one notices if you wear the same thing twice.

The word fashion is the half way point of a teeter totter. One side is low [fashion] and the other side is high [fashion]. Regardless of gender, if you are dressed to comfortably fit at the teeter totters fulcrum you've aced it. Wear outfits that will not make you stand out or feel out of place wherever you go in the evening on your ship - no matter what the other guests are wearing. Best way to choose what outfits to pack is to look at the pictures in your ships sales brochure and dial it back just a little bit. Short of men in white tie and tails and ladies in flowing evening gowns you will never be overdressed on a modern cruise ship. Disregard the last sentence if you plan a less than week long cruise during Spring Break.

We are thrilled to learn that Celebrity has switched from formal to "chic" as it will help greatly with packing. They give a few examples on their website so I'm taking a pair of black slacks with two dressy top. My daughter is carrying a LBD and sandals for chic night. Men? dress slacks and long-sleeve shirt. First time EVER not to have to pack a suit, which thrilled my 22 year old Grandson. LBD is always in style and "chic" for the ladies. We started leaving the ball gowns at home several years ago and taking something that could be worn to a cocktail party. I hated buying these formal gowns that I either didn't ever wear again or kept showing up in the photos cruise after cruise. I usually carry a couple of pairs of dressy capris and tops and do the mix and match. I carry a couple of t-shirt dresses that can do double duty. I can slip it on over a DRY swimsuit to go to the MDR for lunch on a sea day or it can be worn on a tour. I even managed to find a pair of sandals that can double for casual and the chic nights...something I would wear to a nice restaurant, and the men usually carry khaki slacks and a polo/golf shirt for casual nights. This will cut down on all of our luggage, leaving more room for things we buy and no hassles with luggage at the airport.
