Bonobochick Posted August 22, 2016 #1 Share Posted August 22, 2016 (edited) If this was already posted and I missed it, I apologize. The line's private island in the Bahamas will be unavailable from Aug. 25 to Oct. 20, spokeswoman Vanessa Picariello said. http://www.travelweekly.com/Cruise-Travel/Great-Stirrup-Cay-close-two-months Edited August 22, 2016 by Bonobochick tag fix
Rare conandrob240 Posted August 22, 2016 #2 Share Posted August 22, 2016 Yeah, we were the last cruise from NYC last week to get there. I would anticipate it'll probably take longer than expected as well.
AlanFromFL Posted August 22, 2016 #3 Share Posted August 22, 2016 We were just there yesterday, thoroughly enjoyed the day...but one thing critically lacking is shade. Hopefully a few new palm trees will be included!
cincicruisers Posted August 22, 2016 #4 Share Posted August 22, 2016 Does anyone know what they are doing in place of Great Stirrup Cay?

triptolemus Posted August 22, 2016 #6 Share Posted August 22, 2016 I think they were asking what the ship will be doing instead of GSC...
Rare conandrob240 Posted August 23, 2016 #7 Share Posted August 23, 2016 There is plenty of shade. Walk down to cabana beach- just before it are tied and rows of chairs set in trees with full shade. Just after it- up by the bar on the hill before the lagoon area also ties and rows of chairs in the shade.
david_sobe Posted August 23, 2016 #8 Share Posted August 23, 2016 The island is going to be incredible. I just wish there was a way to make sure more ships are successful with their tenders. I remember one rocky windy winter where the majority of cruises were not able to tender there.
Medtech2 Posted August 23, 2016 #9 Share Posted August 23, 2016 I would love to see an actual dock. It's already my favorite stop so I can't wait to go after it's done. I'd be happy on a cruise that just had a sea day, GSC, sea day, GSC, etc...
Rare conandrob240 Posted August 23, 2016 #10 Share Posted August 23, 2016 My guess is that it is not possible to build a dock there. DCL searched long and hard for an island they could dredge to build a dock and I believe finding one was a challenge.

oceanqueen101 Posted August 23, 2016 #13 Share Posted August 23, 2016 Major upgrade over the next year. https://www.ncl.com/freestyle-cruise/great-stirrup-cay Looks amazing but seems to be a bit much for just a few hours stay. Villas 1&2 bedroom??? will they be making this an over night destination
mugtech Posted August 23, 2016 #14 Share Posted August 23, 2016 I'm curious as well. is it still listed in the itineraries for those dates? The web site still showing GSC. In May, 2016, when the Gem needed more than 24 hours in a port for repair purposes, we skipped GSC and went straight to Nassau, docking at noon on the scheduled GSC day, staying overnight, and leaving the following day as scheduled, plus extra OBC per cabin. Sizzlechest Posted August 23, 2016 #17 Share Posted August 23, 2016 My guess is that it is not possible to build a dock there. DCL searched long and hard for an island they could dredge to build a dock and I believe finding one was a challenge. It's a shame, because it was the best destination of my GEM cruise last year. I was lucky that we were able to get to the island without incident, but I hear it gets cancelled often due to weather, waves, and ship problems associated with tendering vs. docking. Rare babs135 Posted August 23, 2016 #18 Share Posted August 23, 2016 Just looked at the link and it shows tram stops. Could someone please explain? Is the Cay that big? I'm really not sure what I expect to see when we visit (hopefully) at the end of the year.
love2shell Posted August 23, 2016 #19 Share Posted August 23, 2016 Hi all, If anyone is lucky enough to visit after the work is completed, kindly let us know what it's like (with pictures as well, if possible)! Thanks in advance!
