Germany Birth Certificate - cruise in 2 days & need help!

Cruise in 2 days and need help! Does anyone know if an out of the country orginal birth certificate meets the identification requirements for travel? Have original birth certificate from Germany (parents were military), U.S. Driver's License, Original Marriage certificate and U.S. Social Security Card.

You need to make a call to carnival. That would be the quickest way to verify.

Is the birth certificate issued by Germany, or is it a Consular Report of Birth Abroad? If it is a CRBA, then you are fine, otherwise you probably have a problem. Most military get CBRA's when a child is born overseas.

Does the person have a Consular birth record of some sort? A German BC doesn't prove US citizenship.

 

At worst go to the Federal Building in Los Angeles and have a passport expedited. Make an appointment. Assuming that the person has the correct paperwork.

Call Carnival ASAP - unless you have a passport, you might have an issue if that is the only document you have.

 

If you were born abroad, or on a Military Base abroad your parents should have registered your birth with the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in that country, and a Consular Report of a Birth Abroad issued. You can obtain a copy of this report from the U.S. Department of State and this is acceptable to prove citizenship - your German BC is not.

 

If your parents can fax you a copy of the CRBA, you need to ask Carnival if this would be acceptable, seeing as how photocopies of BC's are.

As others have said an out of country birth certificate will not work without further documentation to prove your legal status to ensure you can cruise from your embarkation port. Before I had a passport I had to also carry my naturalization papers. Any foreign national sailing from a US port needs a passport...and unless you can prove otherwise since you are sailing with an out-of country birth certificate you need to prove your "current" nationality.

 

I'd invest in a passport...if you have one that is all you will need.

The following are acceptable:

• An original birth certificate issued by a government agency (state/county/city) or the Department of Health and Vital Statistics

Guests from Puerto Rico either need to present a WHTI-compliant document or a government-issued photo I.D. with a validated birth certificate issued after July 1, 2010.

Your issue is whether the foreign birth certificate qualifies as a "Consular Record of Birth Abroad" or one "issued by a government agency (state/county/city)".

 

YIKES at waiting until 2 days before sailing to be concerned. If this is for your BFF, you might not have to end up dealing with the Camp Carnival thing if she can't prove her travel eligibility.

 

You'll need to have some pretty clear answers from Carnival before showing up at port only to possibly be turned away.

I just want to add that your SS card is not ID and should NEVER be taken out of your home for any reason!!

That's how identities get stolen when wallets get stolen.

It should not be carried around with you.

I was born in Italy under the same circumstances. I have an Italian birth certificate and an american certificate of birth abroad. I use a passport for cruises so I don't have to deal with the birth certificates.

You need proof of citizenship. A Germany issued birth certificate state that the person is a Citizen of Germany, not the USA.

 

You will need other documents for proof of citizenship. With all the rule changes going on, I would think you would have available a certificate of foreign birth from the US which is common.

There was a thread a while ago about a person born in another country and the birth was never registered at the embassy/consulate. IIRC it all worked out but took some time. A lot longer than two days.

No, this is not for me. As many of you pointed out I have many cruises and have a passport! When my friend booked, I knew she had been born in Germany, but she told me that she had a valid U.S. passport. This morning she sent me a text stating her passport expired in January 2016!!!! I cannot believe that she had not checked this until now..... however, given her recent diagnosis of MS and 2 cerebral aneurysms, I cut her some slack (after having a small heart attack myself)!

 

Just relieved that she is good to go!

I have carried my SS card for the past 50+ years and have never lost it or had it stolen yet. It's like anything else, don't leave it laying around so that someone can steal it.

Driver's License is all you need in a casino...in Louisiana at least. They may want your SS# but they don't need your card.

 

I used to carry my SS card in my wallet. Then I lost my wallet. I don't carry my SS card anymore.
