Problem resolved... called Carnival 2x and of course, got 2 different responses! 1st response was MUST have passport; 2nd response was needs a "Consular Report of Birth Record", which my bff has verified that's what she has!!!!

No, this is not for me. As many of you pointed out I have many cruises and have a passport! When my friend booked, I knew she had been born in Germany, but she told me that she had a valid U.S. passport. This morning she sent me a text stating her passport expired in January 2016!!!! I cannot believe that she had not checked this until now..... however, given her recent diagnosis of MS and 2 cerebral aneurysms, I cut her some slack (after having a small heart attack myself)!

Just relieved that she is good to go!

Whew, I can breathe again! My DW was born in Germany but she was a German citizen so we had to use her Naturalization Certificate (until we obtained EDLs and then passport).

I'm 100% sure the 2nd answer from Carnival is right. I have a German birth cert (born in a German hospital btw not on base), my father was military, and the consular paper. Don't be shocked if they walk away with it and confer with a few other port people.... they don't see them too often.

I've been on over 25 cruises and only started using a passport the last year (because my cert is getting old and I'm afraid of losing it)

This type of birth cert is difficult to replace so your friend will want to keep the passport up to date (but after this scare I'm sure they will).

I am not wrong about the SS card NOT being ID and NOT being carried around with you ever!

You have been very lucky!!

NO one can require that you show your SS card in order to get winnings or for any other reason.

I suppose some of us just know our SS numbers so never need to show the card if folks for some strange reason may need it.

You are correct.

I want go into all the details of the story of the why I had to get a new social security card but I am almost certain it has a statement on the area around the card that states DO NOT CARRY THIS CARD WITH YOU? PUT IT IN. SAFE PLACE.

My husband had carried his since he was 15 years old (now 69) and I had argued this with him and once he read that statement he allowed me to out his in the safe.

Case closed.

I hope you never go to a casino and win any money over $1200. Without showing a SS card, they won't pay you.

I have carried my SS card for the past 50+ years and have never lost it or had it stolen yet. It's like anything else, don't leave it laying around so that someone can steal it.

This is incorrect.

If you win over $1200, you will be asked for your SS# but won't be required to show your card. You will receive a W-2g in the mail regarding your winnings as it is reported to the IRS

I'm confused, as you have a fistful of previous cruises in your signature line. These ID requirements are not new, so what did you do the last time, and the time before that, etc?

The same question came across my mind . . . Why NOW ? and Why so late ?

3 years ago we took my in laws on the breeze as a present. I insisted they get passports because they are elderly and if there were any issues with their health I didn't want any problems. I was adamant they get their passports renewed, especially since my husband and I have ours.

About 10 days before we left, I went to do online check in and discovered MY passport expired 5 months earlier. Luckily I was able to get an appointment later the same week in Denver for immediate renewal, flew there one morning, had the passport by the end of the day, and flew home the next day. Luckily we had a southwest flight voucher and my sister lives in Denver so I stayed with her.

I had my birth certificate but wasn't about to travel without my passport, especially after being so insistent that my in laws have theirs!

So I totally understand how your friend didn't realize her passport expired!

Absolutely not correct. I never carry my SS Card and i certainly got paid when I hit for $1500+ on the Betty Boop machine.

Worked in a casino for over 8 years and paid out many a jackpot. Never asked anyone for a SS card. Driver's license? Yes, and a verbal request for SSN. The IRS can track them down if they lied.

If they could not provide I.D. They did not get paid until they did.
