return of rentals

we are now considering renting a car. on the days that we have 2 days in port, that would be Maui & Kauai, do you have to return your car to the rental office? Arent there places at the dock where you can park your rental overnight?

A little reading down the board would find a couple threads on the issues parking at Kahalui (Maui). Lots close by have been blocked off. You will need to park further away.

The following is the latest info stated on the boards by POA cruisers:

 

Maui--Park at Maui Mall (won’t toll away even that they say so) park

near Long Drugs and show receipt that you purchase something at the Mall. Or, park back at airport ($13) and take shuttle or taxi ($10) back and forth

Kauai--Buy parking pass at Anchor Cove Mall for $20. Go get your parking pass as soon as you get your car to make sure you have a space.

All car rentals are done at the airport with the exception of Kona on the big island and the rental car shuttles are waiting at the port to pick up folks who have reservations with them and will take the back and forth from the airport.

I just answered this on another thread. Thrifty has a desk at the King Kamehamaha (sp?) Hotel right there at the tender dock. We did this and drove up to Mauna Kea to play a round of golf. It worked out very well.

Maui has plenty of parking, but it did seem to fill up quickly toward the early evening hours, so if you plan to stay out late you might not get a spot there. We had no problem finding a spot when we returned at dinner time. As for Kauai, since we did not have a full day on Day 2, we just rented the car for Day 1, returning it to the airport that evening. For Day 2, some of us did a plane ride over the island, which I would highly recommend as you just can't see the whole island from the ground. Some others did a horseback riding excursion on Poipu Beach, which they also enjoyed very much.

Yes, I am curious also where this is available in Maui. A few years ago this was true, but not since the lot was discontinued. Are they talking about the mall where mall management has stated that there is NO overnight parking allowed?

In Maui, better to park at the airport rather than risk dealing with a towed rental car and a day spent dealing with that rather than touring.

 

In Kauai, there is paid overnight parking at a parking lot at the shopping center by Kalapaki Beach. Have never done it, but I believe the info is here on this board. It is about a 2 block walk back to the port from there.

There was a parking lot and then parking along a street just around the corner. Looks like that has changed since my last cruise there in 2011.
