Cruise ID Document

Friend is going on cruise to Eastern Carribean - Jamaica, Grand Cayman Islands and Cozumel. When she booked cruise, Carnival agent suggested she bring her Birth Certificate and State Issued Drivers License, along with her Marriage License because her Birth Certificate doesn't match her Drivers License. Is that what she really has to bring with her to prove her identity? Obviously she doesn't have a US Passport. TIA

That is what is suggested if the Drivers License does not match the Birth Certificate. The Marriage License is the bridge document. Many people are not questioned and the Birth certificate and Drivers License are sufficient, but it can't hurt to bring the Marriage License if it is readily available.

Required? Should be

Do they ask to see this bridging document 100% of the time? No

Do they ever ask? Yes. If they ask and it's not provided, people have been denied boarding.

How else is Sally Smiths birth certificate used to prove she is the real Sally Jones?

How did she get the drivers license without the marriage certificate?;) (And the birth certificate is not used to prove ID but is used to prove citizenship).

I have said this on many threads. I would never leave U.S. soil without a passport. Bad things happen, that's why they are called accidents not on purpose. The passport is the paramount identification. Does CCL require it , no, but if you got injured and had to leave the ship, try getting back to the U.S. , huge pain

Everyone has different needs when it comes to travel documents and everyone has a different level of tolerance with what risk is involved with not having a passport. What you choose to do has no bearing on what they choose to do and vice versa.

Make sure that the birth certificate is one that is issued by your state's Department of Vital Statistics - a clean and clear photocopy will suffice, too (doesn't have to be notarized/certified)

And I agree that a passport is the ideal travel document

The bottom line is: Yes, your friend needs all of those documents if she does not have a passport. She may not be asked to show the marriage certificate, but if they ask for it and she doesn't have it, Carnival is completely within their rights to deny boarding. It does happen.
