Platoon Leader Posted November 22, 2016 #1 Share Posted November 22, 2016 Over the last month the Nieuw Amsterdam has been unable to dock several times due to high winds. Has this been a problem for other lines? If this keeps occurring will HAL consider replacing this port? When a channel is cut into the reef, there isn't much wiggle room if winds are affecting the ship's course. We missed a call in Bermuda on a Princess cruise a few years ago because it was too windy to get through the reef. As ships get bigger, these maneuvers get trickier. I hope they don't replace GT as a port. I like that beach day better than HMC.
Platoon Leader Posted November 22, 2016 Author #3 Share Posted November 22, 2016 We were looking forward to going there too. Hopefully we will be able to on our next cruise. Sent from my XT1650 using Forums mobile app
wales4ever Posted November 22, 2016 #4 Share Posted November 22, 2016 We won't be too hopeful of docking there next month then!
Krazy Kruizers Posted November 22, 2016 #5 Share Posted November 22, 2016 Over the years we missed Grand Turk several times. We weren't always on the larger ships. Even the smaller ships worry about getting safely through the cut in the reef.
Bill S Posted November 22, 2016 #6 Share Posted November 22, 2016 We were on the Nieuw Amsterdam in February and had no problem getting into Grand Turk. One of the issues surrounding the recent Grand Turk cancellations could be that the fall months are during the annual hurricane season which runs through November. Perhaps, even without hurricanes, it still might be more windy than usual. But having said that, on our February cruise, we had to miss a port in Mexico due to 40knot winds. So, I guess winds can happen at any time.
CruiserBruce Posted November 22, 2016 #7 Share Posted November 22, 2016 We are 2 for 2 getting there, although one was dicey. As for replacement of Grand Turk, as Carnival built GT's port, very unlikely it is going away.
MCC retired Posted November 22, 2016 #8 Share Posted November 22, 2016 Been on 3 cruises that included Grand Turk. We missed docking @ Grand Turk 2 of those times due to wind conditions .
dag144 Posted November 22, 2016 #9 Share Posted November 22, 2016 Having been to Grand Turk on three cruises (HAL and Princess), if you have to miss one island miss Grand Turk!
lvz2cruz Posted November 22, 2016 #10 Share Posted November 22, 2016 We have been able to dock there all four of our scheduled times. Those cruises were in December and January. I like the stop. It's like a private island but you dock instead of tendering.
cervezadrinker Posted November 22, 2016 #11 Share Posted November 22, 2016 Nieuw Amsterdam made it into Grand Turk today. It's the first time making it in this season after missing it the last 2 times.
High Flyer Posted November 22, 2016 #12 Share Posted November 22, 2016 Nieuw Amsterdam made it into Grand Turk today. It's the first time making it in this season after missing it the last 2 times. Nieuw Amsterdam and Eurodam side by side today.
jabcruiser Posted November 23, 2016 #13 Share Posted November 23, 2016 Having been to Grand Turk on three cruises (HAL and Princess), if you have to miss one island miss Grand Turk! Totally disagree. Loved GT. Great beach, way better than 90% of other islands IMO. I am beach person, some people are not. Jane
dag144 Posted November 23, 2016 #14 Share Posted November 23, 2016 When I was there the beach near the pier was quite rocky. Perhaps its been improved since then.

WeRockChalkKU Posted November 23, 2016 #16 Share Posted November 23, 2016 Was just there on Konigsdam last week - first time it was ever there and didn't seem to have any troubles. However, we're there with a Carnival ship and it was very crowded.
jabcruiser Posted November 23, 2016 #17 Share Posted November 23, 2016 When I was there the beach near the pier was quite rocky. Perhaps its been improved since then. You have to walk about 2-3 blocks to left when leave the ship. Very close. If you just go a little ways you will find crystal blue water, white deep sand, no rocks. Not talking "Margaritaville" area. You have to walk a little, but way worth it. We found many people just stopped at the area where you exit the ship. Big mistake if you are looking for the nice beach.
