St Lucia ship's excursion to Pitons

We just did this tour last week. We absolutely loved it. It may have been our favorite thing from the whole two weeks. Just like you, we had some on board credit to use and are glad we did.

We were on the Equinox and took a "cigarette boat" tour we signed up for in the terminal. About 8 people on the tour and cost $45 pp. it was a 3.5 hour excursion. We went up the coastline - at cigarette boat speed - and stopped in some bays for close ups of the land. We pulled into Marigot and got into two vans for an excursion to the volcano and mud baths (included in $45 price). That was hilarious to do! Smelled so sulfurry it was almost overwhelming. We then drove to a waterfall for showering off all volcanic mud. Cool!

 

Back on the boat to a fancy resort and anchored the boat and dowm a ladder to about 4' of crystal clear water for around an hour of swimming and drinking 150 proof rum that was probably distilled a week earlier.

 

Back on the speed boat for another FAST ride to the pier.

 

Better than any ship excursion.

We've been to St Lucia twice with Celebrity; both times on Eclipse. In 2013, we took a land tour that was billed as a "volcano tour." It was awful. For one thing, the transport was a retired Japanese shuttle van and I was stuck with the seat over the wheel hump (my own fault, but it was still unpleasant). You spend much more time riding than anything and the "volcano" is a sulfurous, bubbling mud pit. I did not expect fountains of lava, but having seen Etna, Vesuvius, and Kilauea, it was a let-down. You see the Pitons from about 10 miles away. They were backlit and hazy, so photos were less than impressive.

 

In 2016, we did the coastal cruise. I wish it had been in the afternoon for the good light, but a scheduling change made ours a morning tour. We boarded a covered party barge with an open back deck. The booze was flowing and the music was lively. Sailing is THE way to go. We got within a couple of miles of the Pitons before we turned back. THere was also a stop at a beach for about 20 minutes of swimming. It was a very pleasant tour.

We did this excursion with the ship. At the time, couldn't find a private tour offering a coastal excursion. It was a blast. We had some lively people running the cat and we danced to their great music all the way down and back. The stop for a brief swim required going down a ladder and climbing back up the ladder.
