AKStafford Posted December 7, 2016 #2 Share Posted December 7, 2016 Icy Strait Point (the village of Hoonah) is a great spot for a whale watching trip. You can see local vendors here: http://visithoonah.com/tours_charters.html
TheCalicoCat Posted December 8, 2016 #3 Share Posted December 8, 2016 (edited) Congrats, I too am booked on a 14-night AK cruise next year. (Different itinerary & time frame though.) In Sitka we plan on visiting the National Park & the science center on our own. Since you will not have an opportunity to see bears in the wild, you may be interested in Fortress of the Bears & there is also a Raptor Center. Anyislandwilldo Posted December 8, 2016 #4 Share Posted December 8, 2016 Try reading the reviews from previous cruisers. That will give you an idea of what you would like to do and see based on your interests. I spent hours reading lots of reviews and booked our excursions based on recommendations of prior cruisers. phabric Posted December 8, 2016 #5 Share Posted December 8, 2016 When you are cruising Glacier Bay and Hubbard Bay, wear your warmest clothes- hat, gloves, scarf, long sleeves shirt, sweater/hoodie, jacket as you will want to be outside for long periods of time. I am from Canada, and I went in the beginning of Sept and it was like our winter, COLD, COLD.
VennDiagram Posted December 9, 2016 #6 Share Posted December 9, 2016 ... So, What do I need to know, What do I NEED to see/do? What will haunt me forever if I don't do it?!?! .... Thanks, Lorna from the UK Spend as much time as you can on deck when the ship is sailing. Watch for whales. Watch for dolphins. Get out late at night and enjoy the long twilight. frugaltravel Posted December 9, 2016 #12 Share Posted December 9, 2016 Rent a car in Skagway and drive the White Pass. Very good chance to see black bears on the side of the road that time of year.
