I believe I NOW have the attention of the Casino Club Royale. Final tab was over 10,000 points last cruise. Others have their Genies, I now have a Senior Club Royale Representative, handling my cruising. Each time we talk, I bring up smoking. First is to tackle smoking at the Casino Bar and NOT Playing. After that, we will go for more. I have their attention now.

Don't play then,go to Vegas instead:p

I am not a doctor, but know more about respiratory disease than I would ever choose to know. My husband is 49 and has COPD which was originally reactive airway disease that he developed after his time as a navy corpsman in the gulf. It is thought to be due to the oil fires 25+ years ago. He has never smoked a day in his life and is reasonably fit otherwise.

Things like second hand smoke and even campfire smoke will set his lungs off badly. This is why we choose cabins that will NOT be downwind of a smoking section on a ship. Second hand smoke can trigger a very bad lung day ( if not week!) for someone who suffers from respiratory disease.

I'm disappointed to hear what the poster had to endure due to the selfish nature of thier fellow cruisers and it is something that I think about every time we book a balcony. We have only had this happen one time and it was not 24/7 smoke so we did get a little use out of our balcony. It was also before smoking was banned on balconies. It certainly wasn't what we had planned for though :(

Please thank your Husband for his service. 101st Airborne here early 70's.

One of the large fires a few years back was due to an employee smoking in a back area of the ship. If anything they should be more conscious then the guests. So that just proves that the act smoking increases the odds of a fire on the ship if not extinguished properly.

If it was such a hazard it wouldn't be allowed at all. Smoking on an open deck is no less of a risk than someone smoking on their balcony.

The Princess fire was in 2006 so if Royal really thought there was a fire hazard why did they wait 9 years to stop balcony smoking? And European and Asian cruises have less restrictive smoking policies. Again if it's such a hazard why is it different in different parts of the world?

I'll answer my own question, because the cruise lines are making the policies based on the customer for that sailing. Smoking in the US is much less common than other countries hence more restrictive policies. It is not surprising that they adjust based on whatever their largest demographic would be. That's just smart business.

I am an ex-smoker for 40 years, I don't particularly like the smell of smoking on people, but the odd cigarette fume doesn't bother me too much. I am, however, a champion of fire safety onboard ships, having fought them myself, yet I will agree with BeachChik here, much to the annoyance of the anti-smoking crowd. Smoking on balconies is no more dangerous than smoking in the designated, outside areas of the ship. What is dangerous is what is done with the cigarette afterwards, and this applies to balconies and open deck smoking areas. If the butt is tossed overboard, there is a very good likelihood of it coming back against or into the ship in some area, which may cause a fire.

The Star Princess fire was assumed to be caused by a cigarette, since no other cause was found, but no evidence of a cigarette was found, and in testing, they couldn't ignite with a cigarette the Princess towels that were reported on the balcony.

I believe the fire ksuds is referring to is the Grandeur of the Seas. This fire has never had a cause found. It was at first thought to be caused by the crew smoking in the area, but the security officers who made the rounds that night never saw anyone on the aft mooring deck, and the video cameras there never recorded anyone either. There are some things that point to a possible electrical cause, but due to the damage this has not been proved definitively either.

Thank you for your insight..... a good perspective.

Where would you think someone who is smoking on a balcony rids themselves of the Cigarette Butts without an ashtray? Your expertise here please.

Pardon my ignorance, but what does 10,000 points represent? Is that a lot of winning or a lot of losing. I would think the club Royale would rather make the losers happy.

Soda or beer can, glass, as nasty as it sounds and is. Most smokers who deal with restricted smoking spaces like ships over the years, and most 20-something parties, tend to use the soda can with a little water in it as the old standby. When I smoked, I was working in the offshore oil industry, and there were never ashtrays in the smoking areas. You "field stripped" your butt: you pinched out the coal and stepped on it to ensure it was out, then you shredded the unburnt tobacco out and put the paper and filter if any in your pocket for later disposal.

A lot of both on a 11 night cruise.... two free balconies upgrade-able to GS for a mere little bit....

And a whole lot of other free cruises (mostly Empress, Enchantment, MJ (4 night) but a few Oasis class in off peak season.... haven't received the latest update as I only had 6,000+ point two nights from the end....

Doesn't matter as SO can't take off... and if I go... I might as well go...

One day we will get your email thing fixed and we can discuss...

But wouldn't that be a give away to the cabin Steward?

And just like rum runners, surge protectors, and various other things that passengers do, the cabin stewards are loathe to say anything that can jeopardize their DSC, additional tip, or comment card rating.

...and you don't think the offender would be real imaginative and hide their makeshift ash try. I can think of a lot of places to hide one that a cabin steward has no business looking into. Speaking as an x-smoker of 26 years.

If you don't smoke, it would be easy to sniff out....

Disagree! Again I can think where to hide or not hide an empty glass used for an ash try. How do you know the cabin steward doesn't smoke? That's who you were posting about.

On an unrelated but related note, we avoid the casino because of the smoke. I wonder how much more gambling would take place on the ship if it were a smoke-free environment?

Less gambling. The gaming industry puts studies out all the time how serious/heavy gamblers have a much higher percentage of being smokers than the general population.

That is why you will not see smoking banned in casinos. Now they just add state of the art air purifying systems.

First of all, I'm glad that your Husband is ok. Secondly, your neighbors were jerks. I am a smoker, and I always follow the rules. You will always run into some people who cant stand the rules. I would venture to say that on all of my sailings, we have never experienced a smoker anywhere but their designated areas. I'm sorry you got the short end...

Those studies do not include cruise ship casinos. There's a big difference between landside casinos with competitors and a captive audience at sea on a ship.

Huh? Celebrity banned it years ago, and now HAL is following suit. It's only a matter of time before all the mass market lines do the same.

Hey, we just got new Tanger Outlet Malls here.... NO SMOKING signs are posted EVERYWHERE.... But that for some reason doesn't stop people from smoking without any ash trays and on synthetic grass that is flammable. It stinks.... without making a big scene, I mentioned to them it was a non smoking area, and they told me to F off..... I reported them to Security. They looked a lot like those protesting and blocking our roads.

I did not read all the replies, I got to page 3 and things were going south lol. My 2 cents....RCI did not take care of you as paying customers following the rules. You have the patience of a saint. I would have demanded they be moved after the third time. I would be suing for my $$ back and all medical bills. This is outrageous. And just for the record, I'm not anti-smoking. I smoked for 20 years very heavy, my husband still smokes as do most of my friends and I honestly think some of them would smoke on the balcony until there was a complaint and then they would stop. But....

The rules and regs say you can't smoke on your balcony. You made your reservation assuming you could enjoy your balcony and cruise. You did not. They need to make you whole plus.

To whomever asked the question of what ship to sail under Royal to totally avoid the casino smoking section...........try Anthem. The Casino is on deck three, mid ship. Forward deck 3 are two restaurants, American Icon and Silk with stairs and elevators to reach these eateries if you have MTD.

We totally forgot that there was a casino on board, and only ate at A/I once.

We were very happy with this arraignment and hate to walk through the casino to get from point A to point B.

Also many secret smokers use a coffee cup and then flush.....disgusting!:(
