hop2it Posted December 16, 2016 #1 Share Posted December 16, 2016 I was surprised and disgusted to learn that my bank (Chase) will not allow a travel notification for use of its debit card in ATMs in many South America nations. I could not get a straight answer on whether transactions would still be possible in places such as Uruguay, Venezuela or Chile. I can understand the likelihood of a blocked withdrawal if there was no advance notice, but that's what I thought such notices were meant to avoid. Anyone have advice and experience to share? Lucy Jane Posted December 16, 2016 #2 Share Posted December 16, 2016 (edited) Some ships have ATM's. Check to see if your ship has one. Also, you may be able to cash a check at the Pursers Square also known as "Customer Service" Sent from my iPhone using Forums Edited December 16, 2016 by Lucy Jane

On NCL the Breakaway I set up a check cashing line of credit before my last cruise and all I needed was one blank check and got cash anytime I needed it for the casino onboard but can be used ashore also. hop2it Posted December 20, 2016 Author #5 Share Posted December 20, 2016 Chairsin: Just curious, did you attempt to register a travel notification with Chase? (I have had more than one sort of answer from bank staffers, but I gather it should be possible to use the debit card but they can't guarantee it. In any case, it seems they would prefer having a travel notification to not having one! Or does that require too much common sense?)

Chairsin Posted December 23, 2016 #7 Share Posted December 23, 2016 After getting muddy answers about the travel notification on my June trip to Turkey and Greece from Chase (they could not provide a notification for those countries but did say I would likely be able to use a ATM--and I was) I did not even attempt a travel.notification for this trip. Can't wait to see what happens at the end of my trip in Buenos Aires! Sent from my iPad using Forums

The left hand never knows about the right, and these banks are always charging fees. Many years ago we learned the beauty of Credit Unions where we get reimbursed for ATM fees, are paid dividends at the end of the year, and get terrific service when we need to do something like a travel notification. If your ATM card stops working during your trip, Chase will likely tell you that "you should have notified us, in advance, or your trip." Hank P.S. You have hit on a real issue. As frequent international travelers we now carry 3 different ATM cards, each drawn on an account in a different financial institution. It is just a basic precaution of having a back-up and a back-up to the back-up....because we rely on ATMs when taking long (multi-month) trips. On several trips we have had to rely on one of our back-ups...which just reinforced the need for such precautions.

Hank, We love our credit union and I do have a credit card and ATM for my checking account with them. However, I have other credit cards AmEx Delta and a couple with other airlines and banks. Agee on having backups. We even take about $300 in US dollars extra as a backup in case our ATM card don't work.
Valley Girl of VA Posted December 25, 2016 #10 Share Posted December 25, 2016 May I suggest getting a Schwab ATM debit card. I have used it in many places including Africa with no problem. I simply call them and give them my dates and where I will be. I get reimbursed for all ATM fees. Jane

I linked my Schwab checking account to my "regular" bank account, so I can transfer money to it when I need to. Used it all over Europe last year, in Japan this summer, and I'll be using it next month in S. America. Schwab customer service is wonderful, and you can enter your travel notifications right on their website.
Budget Queen Posted December 27, 2016 #12 Share Posted December 27, 2016 I also am a Schwab customer. Had no problem with using the ATM in Brazil, Chile, or Argentina last month. Hefty fees, all refunded.
