hawk1972 Posted December 22, 2016 #6 Share Posted December 22, 2016 This sounds good to me. Since NCL left Houston, NO will be our closest port. We've been on the Jade and Jewel and like that size ship.
cruise pup Posted December 22, 2016 #7 Share Posted December 22, 2016 I love the Gem and I love NOLA. A great combination IMHO.
leen50 Posted December 22, 2016 #8 Share Posted December 22, 2016 I thought the Pearl was coming? Are both ships going to be sailing from NOLA?
bbeever Posted January 2, 2017 #9 Share Posted January 2, 2017 The Pearl will be in New Orleans for a year then the Gem comes. I just booked a suite on the Gem for the December 16, 2018 cruise out of New Orleans. Looking forward to sailing on it.
Rare mitsugirly Posted January 3, 2017 #10 Share Posted January 3, 2017 So happy to hear this. I have not been able to sail on the GEM yet and she's on my "to-sail" list. It looks like it will be 2018 for me! :D

dongordon Posted January 3, 2017 #13 Share Posted January 3, 2017 Did you see this, Don? http://www.cruisecritic.com/news/news.cfm?ID=7412 No Bob...I did not see this. Thanks for the information. So I guess the Breakaway will continue the long 14 day cruises in January 2018 which is when I usually cruise. At least I hope so. :) I'm going to check the NCL website. nyc511 Posted January 4, 2017 #14 Share Posted January 4, 2017 This is disappointing. While I can appreciate fellow members being pleased to sail on the GEM from other locations, this leaves those of us in the NE with nothing but mega ships. The GEM was, in my opinion, at about 2200 passengers a good size; not too small (like the HAL Veendam), but certainly not with a capacity larger than the enrollment of many well known universities. And I do not know if it is because of the size of the ships, but the convenient 9/10 day cruises are being eliminated for 2 week voyages. To each their own, but having been to these islands numerous times, I don't really need to visit 4 more islands, each one looking exactly like the one before it. Work, kids schedules - all that comes into play now.
Nola26 Posted January 5, 2017 #15 Share Posted January 5, 2017 (edited) I was just on the Dawn for the Christmas cruise and the hotel director, Alain mentioned that the port of NOLA requested a larger ship, looks like it is coming. . AlexandNessa Posted January 31, 2017 #17 Share Posted January 31, 2017 Hoping that Gem will return from NOLA to NYC in Spring 2019 & do a repo. BUT what are the odds there will be no NOLA-NYC repo and it'll be a dry dock instead? I really miss the Jewel class ships not being in Houston. New Orleans is a good compromise!

Have to agree, and since Southwest (preferred airline, have massive points) doesn't fly direct to NOLA from Baltimore, it will be awhile before sailing her again after she repositions.
