FLL tragedy - sailed Conquest NYE 2016

I just sailed the Conquest on 12/31/16 - 1/7/17 out of FLL (8th cruise). First let me say my heart goes out to the families impacted in the FLL tragedy.

I'm literally shocked how Carnival handled the situation RATHER the lack of. We were at sea on Fri and learned of this tragedy when I went back to the room around 5pm to shower. Saw everything unfolding unaware of where this was happening. Quickly learned it was FLL airport which most of the boat was flying out of next morning. Learned via news they closed Port Everglades and didn't know how we would be impacted in the morning.

What blows my mind is CARNIVAL NEVER ONCE ACKNOWLEDGED THIS TRAGEDY OR HOW WE MAY BE IMPACTED IN THE MORNING. DON'T THEY HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY WHEN IT COMES TO A DISASTER RECOVERY PROCESS WHEN A SHIP IS DOCKING IN A PORT THAT IS HEAVILY IMPACTED?

WiFi was beyond snails pace to try and check flight info. It wasn't until 5:30 am when we got data service back did we learn about our flight cancelation. Ultimately we couldn't fly out until Tuesday and was stuck in FL.

We talked with passengers in casino throughout the evening who didn't know this tragedy even unfolded and is around 2am. Many don't sit in their rooms watching news while on vacation and had no idea what had transpired.

I would love to hear your feedback.

Disgraceful from Carnival they should have informed passengers. It highlights a fact that once your cruise is finished they are only interested in the next intake of passenger's.

Will try again, but will probably be deleted for some unknown reason, what should they have informed them specifically?

So when we're the flights cancelled ? How many hours was it before anything concrete came out to the people on land? Which flights were impacted for which airports? Should they have looked at all 4 airports that could serve a cruiser in southeast Florida? Where do you draw the line on any notification?

We happened to be in Rome when the show bomber pulled his idiotic move and were supposed to fly out the next day. There was lots of rumors about what was going to happen but. It a lot of facts? Sometimes a little information is worse than none.

Why is it that people always make the cruise line out to be bad guys. Do you really think they have anything other than their clients best interest at heart?

How about the fact that their flights were cancelled for starters?

Doesn't common sense tell someone that there would be flight delays/cancellations? It shouldn't have fallen on Carnival to keep people aware of what had transpired at FLL.

I agree with Jimbo - why was it Carnival's responsibility? Yes some people would have been impacted by flights being cancelled but alot of people fly out of Miami when sailing out of Fort Lauderdale. I have done both.

There is so much craziness in this world - when on vacation there are also some people that just don't want to hear about this kind of thing - sad but true. The only thing that I would add is that Carnival could have possibly put a note in people's room like they do when there are changes - I have received many over the years.

Boggles my mind you can't have empathy. What would you have them do?

Tell the passengers and keep them aware of the situation. Let them have phone service and WIFI connections to change flights. Most airlines were working with people to get re routed. The FLL airport was closed that day and part of the next and I am sure Carnival knew that. If i was on that sailing I would have been mad. So rude to not inform people of what is going on. Actually it is pretty strange they didnt.

I don't agree that it's the cruise lines responsibility to tell people on the cruise about the FLL shootings.

It's our responsibility to pay attention to what's going on in the world and react according to what if any impact it has on us.

What exactly are the expectations of Carnival ? And how do you expect Carnival to meet those expectations ?

Any information that Carnival could share is readily available from the news sources available on the ship and the responsibility is therefore ours to access and react according to our individual needs.

There is no way Carnival can meet everyone's expectations in a situation like this, so it is best to let people make their own decisions.

The morning of the tragedy we had gotten off of Victory in Miami. We were flying out of West Palm much later in the day. We must have just passed the airport about 45 minutes before it happened. While at West Palm, planes bound for Ft. Lauderdale were landing at West Palm. The airlines had no answers for these people, because honestly there was no information they could give them. They told them that they were going to bus them to the Ft Lauderdale Convention Center. We had friends at Ft Lauderdale when it happened. They also didn't have details on what to do. Rebooking flights was not easy, because there was also a storm covering the East Coast.

I really think it's up to any cruise line to let their "guest" know.

They can tell by the guest check in list who is leaving from FLL

and possible let them use the computers if their flights are effected..

or even change their flights to a different air port.

And shame on those who show lack of compassion... it's a respect issue

and so sure if that was your airport you are traveling from or your loved one it would be a different story

wow. They definitely should have let customers know and given them access to internet to change flights.

We relied on the news and watched for updates regarding the airport reopening since it's was crickets from Carnival. Initially Port Everglades was closed and reopened around 10pm. Then we learned around midnight that FLL was reopening for flights at 5am. They had info to share. Even when you talked to carnival employees in the bar or casino, it's like they we're trained not to say anything because they wouldn't engage in conversion.

Once we had data service back at 5:30 is when we had 2 VM's and text communication that our 1pm flight was canceled and called airline immediately but at that point couldn't get a flight out until Tuesday.

I understand that Carnival has no control over our flights and is not the reason for my post. Many passengers didn't even know this event occurred until the morning when disembarking. While on vacation we shouldn't be glued to TVs and believe that Carnival should have notified passengers of this tragedy since we were docking in FLL.

I'm not asking Carnival for monetary compensation or anything towards a future cruise.... NOTHING! I feel they chose not to say anything to avoid any disruption and $'s from last evening at sea.

Unless you were on that ship and living it, can you understand the impact or how you'd really feel about the situation.

So it is easy to play Monday morning quarterback, but let's take your points: Tell the passengers and them aware. We (stateside) had no idea until late Friday night that the airport was going to be closed. We had the extra advantage of all the feeds from the different networks. Did we know then that FLL was out of action on Saturday? No. Kind of kicks the crap out of that line. Most airlines had zero idea on what was happening, so I am sure they were all just waiting to help the passengers on the Carnival Conquest. So Much for that one. Lastly and certainly not least, we have the statement "If I was on that sailing I would have been mad". "So rude to not inform people ..." Ian sure you would have been....it would have been your vacation...and we know how the ugly American tourist syndrome works. Maybe, just maybe everyone was doing what they thought was the best thing. It is not strange at all, they were trying to give their clients the best vacation-from start to finish... Now I am sure the name calling will begin....

Listen, I understand your frustration, but still think you are wrong. I have been on a ship in a similar situation and, it was handled the same way. By the way, RCCL did not tell their passengers anything at all....

Not if people don't watch news on the ship. Which is common with a lot of people. If they weren't told about what happened they would disembark to shocking news. Maybe with a little planning they could have made other arrangements to get home, such as renting a car and driving to another airport.

Really, was it that hard to make an announcement? You can bet your sweet bippy that the capatian knew exactly what was going on all the time.
