lizglea Posted February 7, 2017 #1 Share Posted February 7, 2017 I have done most of the Europe river cruises and wondering how this cruise compares. Any WOW spots, is there enough to see on the river, is there more than just wine tasting.
pacmom Posted February 7, 2017 #2 Share Posted February 7, 2017 If you can spend 2 weeks, look at Road Scholar's trip---the Dordonge (sp.) Valley and the cruise out of Bordeaux. It was wonderful--saw so much and then the week out of Bordeaux--very relaxing. Our guide was the founder of the wine museum in Bordeaux, third generation of vinters and a member of the Society de Tastevin. We had some remarkable wine tastings. Yes it is on a Croisie Ship, but there were many english speaking pax. Would highly recommend the trip. Pat
Rare patrickmoran Posted February 8, 2017 #3 Share Posted February 8, 2017 We did Viking's cruise in late November. The WOW for me was the city of Bordeaux where we had alot of time. Lots to see, do and taste. The cruising was OK but the tides dictate the boat's schedule. We ended up with a bus trip to Cadillac instead of cruising. We went for seeing and tasting Bordeaux wines/wineries and were not disappointed.
Rare beanpittsburgh Posted February 8, 2017 #4 Share Posted February 8, 2017 We did the Viking Bordeaux cruise in 2015. We enjoyed the cruise very much but keep in mind that this cruise is very different from most cruises. We only traveled a 100 miles or so in the week and everything is dependent on the tides. The bridges are old and low so the Captain had specific times he had to sail. Bus rides were relatively short and the ship usually docked in a convenient spot for easy walking into town. The WOW for us was Bordeaux itself and of course the wine. If you want scenic cruising with castles and beautiful landscapes, I would look somewhere else
Canal archive Posted February 8, 2017 #5 Share Posted February 8, 2017 Check on the phases of the moon when you book your Bordeaux cruise if it's full you are almost certain to have your cruise itinerary moved around. A full moon means a higher tide and therefore no way to get under the Napolian bridge. The water level must be very low to navigate under the bridge and the captain must be very highly qualified. On Scenic last year their youngest captain returned from holiday to oversee the operation at only 23 he is even more qualified than his father who is also Captain for Scenic. Although our itinerary was moved around all went smoothly and we didn't miss a thing. All together an excellent cruise. CA
caviargal Posted February 8, 2017 #6 Share Posted February 8, 2017 The highlight for us was the time we spent in Bordeaux. We had 4 full days there and very much enjoyed it.
leftygolfer Posted February 8, 2017 #7 Share Posted February 8, 2017 We did the Viking river cruise in June, 2016. Loved all of the excursions. Highly recommend the tour to a cooperage ( barrel maker). The city of Bordeaux was great as we arrived a couple of days ahead of time to explore and visit some of our favorite wineries that were not on the itinerary. Highly recommend and agree on all posts above that time of year and type of cruise is different than others. You'll have the opportunity to drink a lot of wine, Sauterne and or Cognac.
