When your in port for the day can you bring drinks back on the ship in your carry on?

Yes, per carnival website you can bring cans of non_alcoholic beverages back on board. Usually limited to a 12-pack.

...

Does this apply to bringing bottled beverages on board in ports of call too?

A. Yes. In port,*a*small quantity of non-alcoholic beverages (i.e., sparkling water, sodas, juice, and milk) packaged in cans or cartons may be brought onboard as well as Carnival branded bottled water previously purchased onboard. A small quantity is considered a maximum of 12 sealed, unopened cans/cartons of 12 ounces each or less per person.

At the beginning of the drink restrictions it was really draconian for bringing beverages back from various ports. They wouldn't store non-alcoholic beverages.

Now they are allowing sodas etc onboard. Have had no issues with soda cans and juice cartons.

Our experiences have been on the Mexican Riviera, YMMV.

Getting a 12 pack of soda is real easy in St Thomas, right at the Havensight mall grocery store or on Grand Turk, right in the duty free shop as you enter the complex. Or at the CVS on the main drag adjacent to the ship's in San Juan. Other ports can be a little more difficult, and you'll pay more for the soda.

Despite someone else saying "no", YES you CAN bring alcohol back on with you. If you buy a bottle in port somewhere, bring it back but they will hold it for you until the end of the cruise. You can't take it back to your stateroom.

Also as others said, yes you can bring a 12pk of soda back on board with you as well.

What is the alcohol allowance to carry on?

Do you mean at a port or at the beginning of a cruise? While I can't quote the beginning of the cruise it is a 750ml bottle of wine or champagne by an adult at embarkation. As far as I know, you cannot bring any back to your cabin at ports (other than med cruises).
