No for me it was the considerable smoke from the open air mid ship casino On the gem it is infinitely easier to enjoy the ship indoors because you can easily avoid the casino smoke Sent from my iPad using Forums

ldlewis45 Posted February 23, 2017 #32 Share Posted February 23, 2017 I personally loved the Breakaway, but I will admit that there is a major issue with smoke from the casino drifting along decks 6,7, and 8. My biggest complaint when I sailed on her in 2013 was the behavior and attitudes of my fellow passengers. The crew members were entirely lovely, the food was very good (probably the best buffet I've had on a ship), and the spa was amazing. I'm booked on the Breakaway to sail to Bermuda again in September! I just plan on avoiding the atrium area and casino as much as possible.

That's the best thing about the ba. It's takes cruisers right from NYC to a number of incredible islands They are doing a great western Carib itin next year!!!! As I said it's the best thing the ba has going for it....that it does long well priced cruises in the winter But the ship is still poorly designed Sent from my iPhone using Forums
lenquixote66 Posted February 23, 2017 #34 Share Posted February 23, 2017 I guess cigarette smoke doesn't bother you You like standing in the atrium You aren't planning to use the pool And the metal bar sticking into your lower back in the theater doesn't bother you I hope you are on the 14 day itin and not the Nassau milk run though....because the great ports make the ship bearable Sent from my iPhone using Forums Great post

ljandiernp Posted February 25, 2017 #36 Share Posted February 25, 2017 I have never been on ANY ship where smoke wasn't a problem in the casino and in the halls on either side of the casino. This is not a problem unique to the Breakaway. I use this problem as an opportunity to walk up and down stairs to get around the area. Helps burn off all the extra calories I'm taking in on vacation.:D Laurie Lol you absolutely know that there is a smoke problem in and around the casino so please don't mislead people Sent from my iPhone using Forums

This is not a problem unique to the Breakaway. I use this problem as an opportunity to walk up and down stairs to get around the area. Helps burn off all the extra calories I'm taking in on vacation.:D Laurie The issue with the ba casino smoke is that the ba casino is not enclosed and is an open casino located on deck 7 of what is an atrium consisting of decks 6/7/8 I think they call it ocean 6/7/8 or something The smoke waifs all over those decks and as far as le bistro and the bars and food places on 8 The casino smoke IS unique to the ba whereas on a ship like the gem or jewel the casino is in an enclosed room and the smoke doesn't go very far It's easier to avoid the casino on the gem too But On the ba if you want to avoid the casino smoke you are also going to miss out on the many many other venues in that 6/7/8 area Ba is a large ship...thus more gamblers and smokers onboard to begin with This whole ba smoke issue is a moot point anyway because the fact is that it is a very very smoky casino regardless of how many posters say it isn't If you want to avoid smoke from the casino then just cruise the gem because the ba casino smoke will not only be in the casino it will infiltrate 6/7/8 This is a fact although many try to say it is fiction....it is not fiction Sent from my iPhone using Forums
sandyh85 Posted February 25, 2017 #38 Share Posted February 25, 2017 Honestly, as long as I have a book, a balcony, and a glass of champagne? The rest of the ship can do whatever they want. This. clarkiescruisers Posted February 25, 2017 #40 Share Posted February 25, 2017 I leave next week can't wait to go> I have read negative reviews and positive reviews. We went on a Carnival ship two years ago same mix of reviews had a great time. Same people complain they can't get a lobster dinner every night really? you pay about $800 to $1000 for a week for everything. We go out in Boston cost us $150-$200 for dinner for one night. newmexicoNita Posted February 25, 2017 #42 Share Posted February 25, 2017 I've been on the breakaway for a little more than 48 hours. I have to say that after reading MANY poor reviews, I don't think that I boarded the right ship-- I've been having a great time!! No major complaints, any minor issues have been swiftly taken care of. Very happy so far. Stay tuned-- I will be posting menus when I return on Sunday. Sent from my iPhone using Forums always easier to post negatives than positives: people expect to have a good time, so they take it for granted: if they have problems they want everyone to know every detail. I have read many great things about the Breakaway. We board her in 5 weeks.
newmexicoNita Posted February 25, 2017 #43 Share Posted February 25, 2017 (edited) Well, I booked ourselves on the Breakaway for the March 19 cruise - one of the worst itineraries - in middle of winter - for a couple of reasons - my DH's 70th and I am in a great need of a break from work ... we are going to have a whale of time ourselves in our way. We have never had a bad cruise. We did a 2-nighter CTN on BA in Jan 2015, altho' it was a wee cruise, we enjoyed our time on BA, so looking forward to return to BA. What bad reviews are you talking about??? I must have selective reading of the threads/posts - just like the kids having selective hearing ..... hope you are not overrun with college kids that week.:eek: I will add one thing, I agree about the itinerary. We do not intend of even getting off the ship. I take it back: we will get off in CC; our younger daughter is meeting us there; she lives in Orlando area. BTW: to those who conplain about the smoke in the casino: we heard the sae about the Epic. It really wasn't an issue at all. At least not for us. Sent from my iPad using Forums mobile app If the ships are identical that does not mean the smoke issue is also identical. However....the getaway sails from where? Florida? It could very well be that there is a different demographic plus it sails in good weather so less people crowding into the casino perhaps? Trust me the BA sailing from NYC...while it has excellent winter itineraries....has a very smokey casino and the smoke waifs To compare the smoke issue on the 2 ships one must look at itin..pax demographic...and home port...and time of the year For if one doesn't consider those variables then the resulting info and/or opinion is incorrect Alternately .....one can continue to insist the BA casino is NOT smokey nor does it waif to several other decks and venues ...but that would be to believe something that is not true Just an FYI...if you are used to Florida sailings and pax....you will be rather amused with the pax demographic from NYC sailing to Bermuda in August. There will be loads of pax on their "trip of a lifetime" plus loads of pax that had to twist family members arms to take this cruise. You will have a great time of course but IMHO may or September are a better demographic out of NYC...of course not always feasible fir some pax Yup I'm a northern NYC suburbs snob (not) and I have a good sense of the various personalities of people in the various areas of tri state area and August is the least desirable demographic that cruises the BA to Bermuda However that doesn't mean I personally wouldn't do it...it just means I know what to expect and can deal with it Trust me the majority of August NYC cruisers are not savvy frequent cruisers Doesn't make them bad people by any means...although posters will take it that way...they are nice for the most part ...as are most if not all New Yorkers....it's just that many are out of their comfort zones and will have difficulty coping...therefore will complain and not really understand the nuances of cruising Sent from my iPhone using Forums Edited February 25, 2017 by luvtheships

JAMESCC Posted February 25, 2017 #48 Share Posted February 25, 2017 Well we had a great time to Bermuda last September but breakaway is not my favorite ship. Layout, elevator situation and smoke from the casino are my major issues. I think the overall design leaves a lot to be desired. Bottlenecks of passengers, smoke from casino is terrible and then just flat out dead ends. Passengers turning around because they mapped out where they wanted to go and then having to turn around and find another way is not ideal. The food is excellent, one of the best from free to pay. That is my take but try it yourself and see. Everyone is different. I'm still looking at Escape out of NY. Oh that Brings me to the last issue. The terminal in Manhattan is out of control. Employees yelling at, I mean really yelling at people. They yelled at passengers, and other employees. I HATE that terminal with a passion. I have issues with passengers too, but to out and out yell at paying customers is not right. I know they don't work for NCL but they still warm l earn their salary from these passengers. I absolutely HATE that terminal. Sent from my Pixel using Forums mobile app

Many are dragging spouses kicking and screaming. The husbands are more than willing to announce that "the" wife dragged him on the cruise... Many overpaid big time because they don't understand cruise pricing Many will walk off the ship with $2000 bills because they think they are supposed to buy bingo cards and tons of photos So yes it's a less than savvy group cruising in August...doesn't make them bad people just makes them uninformed and therefore somewhat difficult to be near. They won't hurt you though so don't worry Have you ever taken a cruise out of NYC in August? Are you familiar with the demographic that waits until the very end of the summer to cruise? Are you aware that college kids go back to campus mid August? And high school athletes are in the fields from early August? Those families are NOT cruising in August Sent from my iPhone using Forums Edited February 25, 2017 by luvtheships

Those families are NOT cruising in August Sent from my iPhone using Forums I've never cruised in August, so I'll have to take your word for it. I'm not sure why families with college students or high school athletes would necessarily be savvier cruisers just because their summer vacation schedule precludes them from cruising in August. It sounds as if you're not a fan of families with younger kids who are constrained to travelling during school holidays, and have to pay up for booking during high season. I don't quite know why August would be any worse than June, July or winter/spring break in that respect, though, or NYC departures versus any other port departure in August. The thread starter is currently on the Breakaway and I'm sure the ship is filled with families with kids on their mid-winter school break. They don't appear to be fazed by it.
