GordonJasmine Posted March 27, 2017 #1 Share Posted March 27, 2017 We are booked for the March southern South America cruise and are getting worried about the weather there. We like it hot, but I'm now afraid we may be going at the wrong time. Can anyone tell me which month of the year is the warmest in southern Chili? Would February be warmer than March? Thanks so much if you can answer this question. Marilyn
Merriem Posted March 27, 2017 #2 Share Posted March 27, 2017 We have gone in March and for us it is just fine. It is a great trip and would not worry about the weather.
vakamalua Posted March 27, 2017 #3 Share Posted March 27, 2017 Yes, February is warmer than March. The warmest months are December and January (summer in the southern hemisphere). The warm months are also very windy.
Happy Cruiser 6143 Posted March 27, 2017 #4 Share Posted March 27, 2017 If you're going to Chile in March, isn't it a bit late to make a change? Or is it next March?
thinfool Posted March 27, 2017 #5 Share Posted March 27, 2017 Because you say "southern" Chile, I take it that you are on a trip around the Horn from Buenos Aires. This is a wonderful sailing, but you must realize that it is similar to sailing to Alaska in September. Southern Chile (Patagonia) is full of wondrous sights, mountains, waterfalls, glaciers, etc. While the weather will not be frigid, you must plan for both chilly and hot humid days. Also I would add that, like Alaska, southern Chile isn't known for a lot of great beaches.
jsf Posted March 27, 2017 #6 Share Posted March 27, 2017 Might be Chili, and then again it might not be
GordonJasmine Posted March 27, 2017 Author #7 Share Posted March 27, 2017 I lived in Florida for 26 years and my daughter and I are both freeze babies. Do you think we will we be able to swim in the ship's pools in March? Most all of our cruises have been in the nice warm Caribbean.
GordonJasmine Posted March 27, 2017 Author #8 Share Posted March 27, 2017 The cruise is for 2019. We don't really care that much for beaches - just some warmth. :) I know the scenery will be beautiful. Just hope I didn't make a mistake because of Chili's weather. coldweathergirl Posted March 27, 2017 #9 Share Posted March 27, 2017 When we did the Around the Cape sailing at the end of January a few years ago we had snow when we got to Ushuaia. Many of the "northern" ports were hot ( Valparaiso, Buenos Aires, Uruguay).
GordonJasmine Posted March 27, 2017 Author #10 Share Posted March 27, 2017 I just changed our booking to the one that is Jan. 6 to Jan. 20. My fingers are crossed. After all, it is their "summer", right? :-)

Just hope I didn't make a mistake because of Chili's weather. The weather in Chili New York is cold in February and March. Very pretty scenery but cold. If you are going to the country of Chile the weather will be much warmer in February and March. Very pretty scenery too.
GordonJasmine Posted March 27, 2017 Author #12 Share Posted March 27, 2017 Now I'm really confused. Someone posted that their summer Dec. and Feb. and that it is colder in March. Which is right?!
thinfool Posted March 27, 2017 #13 Share Posted March 27, 2017 March is autumn in Chile. The other poster was having fun with your (mis)spelling of Chile. Sent from my iPhone using Forums
Merriem Posted March 27, 2017 #14 Share Posted March 27, 2017 One thing you can do is add some cities in chile to a weather app on your phone and compare. It is warm when you start and end and cool in the south. Great trip.
Gonzo70 Posted March 27, 2017 #15 Share Posted March 27, 2017 January in Chile is a couple degrees warmer on average than March, but if you are doing an Around-the-Horn cruise, this is not a warm weather cruise regardless of the month. While you likely will have warm/hot weather for the beginning and latter portions of the cruise, for the middle portion on average one would have highs in the 50's and lows in the 40's (Fahrenheit) with a good chance of some precipitation, wind and rough seas some of the time. This is a cruise far more about the scenery than the weather.
GordonJasmine Posted March 27, 2017 Author #16 Share Posted March 27, 2017 One thing's for sure. It will be warmer than it is in Cleveland!!! We'll just bring some warm clothes and enjoy the scenery. I so appreciate everyone's posts on this thread. I did book a cabin on the port side of the ship so it shouldn't get so much of those awful western winds I've been reading about in the fjords. And yes, I did spell Chile wrong. :D
lawgeek Posted March 28, 2017 #17 Share Posted March 28, 2017 If you get there and it is chilly in Chile, just order a piping hot bowl of chili! Ok, I'll chill out now!
MEcruzr Posted March 28, 2017 #18 Share Posted March 28, 2017 We spent a day in Ushuaia in the middle of their summer. Flowers all in bloom and the sunny shining... and it had snowed the day before. Since it was the middle of our winter we had traveled with winter coats, hats and gloves. We used them!! If you have a balcony or plan to out on deck you will definitely need cold weather clothing. You're going to need clothes for hot AND cold weather for this cruise!
