cocoaloco Posted April 14, 2017 #26 Share Posted April 14, 2017 from what little I have heard, and it is all at least 3rd hand from jr. officers, and front desk supervisors, is the coast guard certified to the Customs and Boarder Patrol the vessel did not have the capacity to do a ferry type service to any other U.S. port. Hence the waiver of the Passenger Vessel Safety Act. While at sea, (meaning the shops and casino can open) repairs are to be made. Apparently these repairs are of an electronic nature not a mechanical one. So hopefully a few new circuit boards and we are good to go. But . . . . There may be a lot more we will never know....
kimber88 Posted April 14, 2017 #27 Share Posted April 14, 2017 We are to set sail on her on Monday. Please continue with updates. Our party has 13 cabins booked, but have decided a cruise to "nowhere" would be better than a complete cancellation.
pe4all Posted April 14, 2017 #28 Share Posted April 14, 2017 I was curious how the 50 percent off future cruise will work. Will it only be on a 4 day cruise?? I think the way the credit works is you get 50% off the amount you paid for the current cruise, and then the same amount credited towards a future cruise of your choice. You don't get 50% off the price of the future cruise. I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong. This is correct. We were on Splendor when she had the engine issue. We received $780 back on our credit card 2 weeks later, and have a $780 credit to use on a future cruise booking. We got back the port taxes for the 2 ports we missed as obc, if I remember correctly. Whatever you paid as cruisefare per person - no taxes/fees included- will be what you will get back.
Je Souhaite Posted April 14, 2017 #29 Share Posted April 14, 2017 On the Fantasy now and they just announced we are having propulsion issues. We will not make the port of Cozumel and they are trying to get approval to do a cruise to nowhere. 50% off this cruise and 50% off additional cruise plus $50 on board credit per person. Sent from my iPhone using Forums mobile app Wow! Even after many posters state here that "ports are not guaranteed" and to "read your contract", and a whole bunch of other nonsense showing why THEY are not in the cruise business. Great news! Make the best of it!
Je Souhaite Posted April 14, 2017 #30 Share Posted April 14, 2017 So does CBP waive the fine for PVSA violations in case like this? Sure. They did for the Triumph fire and total power loss. Towed back to Mobile.
Cruise-Crazy Posted April 14, 2017 #31 Share Posted April 14, 2017 We are on the May 11 cruise. On my! I am fine with floating around the sea. Just get me on board. Sent from my VK810 4G using Forums mobile app Well said!
elainmir Posted April 14, 2017 #32 Share Posted April 14, 2017 We did a cruise out of Tampa and because we missed one day due to fog and them closing port we had a cruise to nowhere and 1/2 off that cruise and the next. You do a 4 day cruise that something like that happens on ...you can only book a 4 day or less. I hope they get the issues fixed quickly for all those cruising after you. I sail her again June 22. BoDidly Posted April 14, 2017 #33 Share Posted April 14, 2017 I guess on the last cruise. Ship was late getting in. Sent from my iPhone using Forums mobile app You would have thunk they would have provided some type of info in advance ? limping back to port was a sure sign. There may be a lot more we will never know.... What the crew meant was that the ship was foreign flag, so not able to transport passengers from one US port to another, which would have been a violation of the PVSA. The PVSA specifically allows for "cruises to nowhere". The reason that cruises to nowhere disappeared has nothing to do with the PVSA, it has to do with crew visas. Since a cruise to nowhere is considered a domestic voyage, the crew would be considered employed inside the US, and CBP would require B-1 work visas for the entire crew instead of the much easier to obtain C1/D crew visa. So, while this is not a violation of PVSA, CBP still needs to give a waiver for the crew visas. If the cruise had gone to multiple US ports, and missed a foreign port, then it would have been a violation of the PVSA, but waivers are almost always given for weather problems, and mechanical issues. Teachmath1 Posted April 14, 2017 #36 Share Posted April 14, 2017 My sister is sailing on this on Monday. She has is leaving today to drive there. She called Carnival as her son has autism and change is difficult. What she found out is they no longer have for sale any dates until May 11th on the Fantasy, they won't refund her money right now, they would not provide any discount/OBC and are not willing to switch her to any other boat. They said it will be up to the coast guard if they sail on Monday.
haleysmom2003 Posted April 14, 2017 #37 Share Posted April 14, 2017 Sounds like a bargain! Been to Cozumel many times..50% off this one and next cruise plus credit!! Nice. Just hope they do get it fixed by April 22 though..my brother-in-law and sister-in-laws 1st cruise. Wanted it to be perfect for them so they will cruise with us more often. I am good with 50% off this cruise and 50% off a future cruise plus onboard credit. Been to Cozumel 7 times so no big loss. Rare jimbo5544 Posted April 14, 2017 #39 Share Posted April 14, 2017 Was going to mention earlier we had not heard any Carnival bashing, thought maybe in light of significant religious holidays everyone was taking the higher path and then my faith in man kind is restored. jetskier Posted April 14, 2017 #40 Share Posted April 14, 2017 I was on the Glory two weeks after they had missed two ports. They almost had a riot onboard with folks not understanding missed ports. But I did learn something new because of it. Nationwide offers a port guarantee with their travel insurance. If they announce a port will be missed before you sail, you get back $500-$750pp depending on the policy you get. If announced after you sail, you get back $100-200pp depending on the policy. Since we were doing a B2B, I was able to insure the two weeks for $144. And we ending up missing Grand Cayman. I had the Universal policy which paid $100pp. In the future, I will get the Choice policy. So to the point at hand, if folks would have had the Choice policy for this sailing, they would have gotten back $750pp. (plus all that the cruiseline is offering). Dave The real point is that the "almost rioters" need to get a check up from the neck up. Nothing worse than an angry tourist screaming about their vacation. I always feel bad for the crew at guest services when angry mob syndrome take over. Your point on potential insurance coverage is something to consider although I would wager misses ports is fairly low statistically speaking.
